i reported exactly the same problem (see #667).
i was told it was my fault.
i spent about a week trying to fix it with X server upgrades and config
changes.
i could not fix it - so have learnt to live with it.

for me it happens on at least two different frontends - an AMD64 desktop
machine with a 20" display and my laptop.
one uses NVidia and the other ATI.

so i don't know where to go from here.

so a rather longwinded me too!

This used to happen to me, a LOT, and I couldn't get rid of it. I recently
upgraded back up to SVN head, and switched to the blootube OSD and now it
all looks great again.

It's the font coupled with some exacerbating factor (which we haven't
yet figured out). See
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/mythtv/users/294597#294597 . You
probably updated your blootube-osd to the "development" version, in
which the font is commented.

i know, i know. i didn't pay for this - so can't complain
but when i reported this - i had a mis-configured system.
when i asked who the fonts weren't controlled by the UI, i was told that
this was deliberate - as the font was tied to the OSD
i only found this out after trying (and failing) to change the font with
the UI to work around this problem.

feeling rather sick to discover that the font is at fault
but then again - i shouldn't complain as myth is (to a very great
extent) wonderful.

Why are you feeling sick? There are no less than 3 ways to change the
font--two of which are mentioned in the above-linked post, and the third
(and, probably, most intuitive) being to edit the font filename in the
osd.xml file.

One of the ways in the above-linked post (option a) changes the OSD
theme such that it defers to the UI-selected font, the "OSD font"
setting in the frontend settings--which seems to be what you want.

If you're sick that I didn't tell you this when it was first important
to you, then, please, pardon me. :)

Find the exacerbating factor (find why that font doesn't work on /your/
system--I can't reproduce the issue), and it will be fixed properly. I
personally hate recommending workarounds--I don't work in the medical
industry--I'd prefer to fix the problem rather than the symptom.

just because i've been banging my head against this problem for a long

what i really don't understand is why all the OSD themes don't honour
that setting.

my wild unsubstantiated theory is that it has something to do with the
truetype font renderer.
but like i said, this is a wild theory.

Because the theme designer decided that font A looked better with their design
than the default fonts offered in the UI (FreeSans, FreeMono). Fonts can have
a major impact on the look of a theme or the OSD, so you can't blame the
designer for being very specific in their choices.

We will probably come up with better font integration in the future. Ideally a
theme should default to using the font the designer intended, but be changed
in the UI to something different by the user.

with this info i went through all my OSD themes, one by one and sure
enough, then ones that give me trouble have the fontfile specificed in
osd.xml

Gray-OSD and Retro-OSD from myththemes and an old copy of
projectgrayhem-OSD that i have downloaded from the web before it became
part of themes.

thanks for the workaround!
i wish i knew what was wrong though.
i will test anything to try and resolve it.
