3g/2g setting and data roaming

Hi.

A question for people with a N900 and a 3G subscription, H3G preferably:
can you set the network mode (3g vs 2g vs dual) *separately* for voice
and data?

H3G Italy does not have perfect UMTS coverage so they give free roaming,
but only for voice calls, while data traffic on other network is outside
the data plan. I'd like to be able to tell the phone to only use UMTS
for data and whatever goes for voice calls.

However hard I looked, I only found a master switch for the network mode
that doesn't differentiate between voice and data and bugzilla has
nothing on that.

Comments?

A.

Hello Andrea,

As far as I can see it in the Phone settings you cannot set the
network mode seperately for voice and data. What you can do though is
prevent automatic Data Roaming. You can switch between "always ask"
and "always allow".

Is it considered "roaming" if the network doesn't change but coverage is
so marginal that only GPRS works instead of UMTS? A corner case,
perhaps, but I see it quite often and my soon-to-be-activated H3G
subscription says I'm going to pay for that ;-(

For starters, though, your suggestion is just what I plan to do... we'll
see how it works.

I wouldn't say that's roaming. For roaming you would have to not only
change connection types but (also) providers. I have the same
situation here in Germany. Where I live there's no 3G network, but in
the next city there is. But it's all the same network (T-Mobile) so
that isn't roaming. So is it really the case that they charge you
again in Italy for EDGE if you have a 3G data plan?

Yes, there is no way to have data go on a network type and voice on another.

Anyway, when you switch provider (e.g. roam), voice continues to work
and you are asked
for data roaming. So I don't see the issue here.

You will never roam data over a "friend" provider unless you tell the phone to.

We'll see hopefully at the end of the coming week, once the MNP
procedure is carried out.

For option "Naviga 3", the official pricelist states: "the offer can be
used under H3G national coverage. [...] National GPRS traffic is not
included and will be charged by volume at 1€/MB plus 15cent additional
session charge" (original in italian, translation is mine)

I've the same carrier in Italy :\
It's good and cheap for some things, but roaming is very expensive.
