N900 Users

So those of you that have one, what do you think of it?
It is always nice to hear from actual users.

Is the software on it complete, or is it crippled like previous systems?
I am curious as to such things as the address book, calendar, to-do
list, even the native email client.

Any other interesting finds with the N900?
Was it worth the price, and are you using it as part of a carrier
service, or not?

It's awesome.

Not perfect yet.

Usable. At times a bit irritating. Much better than in OS2008 on a
N8x0.

They're not for sale yet. Nobody yet had a chance to buy one. I got
mine as a 6-month loan at the Maemo Summit.

For me personally it'd be worth the full price.

A 3G SIM card with unlimited data enhances the experience considerably.
E.g. without it the GPS is mostly useless. Also, being always online is a
new way of looking at things that unlocks the full potential of Internet
Tablets. I first experienced it at CERN, which had WiFi everywhere.

BTW I do not intend to use my N900 as a phone. The battery life is too
uncertain for that: since it's such a pleasant thing to use, I keep
using it all the time and drain the battery in 6 to 8 hours. For voice
calls I'm quite happy with my Series 40 Nokia 6600 that only needs
charging once or twice a week.

Re: N900 Users [In reply to]

I changed 0.5 h after I got it from my Nokia E75, I can't go back. I
think it is the best device I had have.
It is so great, I love it. Big big improvement since Nokia N810. Of
course Maemo 5 and N900 will be improved during the time, Nokia made
this clear. But I think it is good enough for me, it is even better
than I thought. One thing I would like to see soon is support for PIM
synchronization with Mac OS X.

What do you mean by "mostly useless"? Is it already useless for you if
it takes about 10 seconds to get a fix?

In Germany, there are some providers that send coordinates of the base
stations in their cell info (at least they did some time ago), so
theoretically this could be used to improve position services.
Unfortunately, this part is closed-source, isn't it?

Kind regards,
Christian

I like it. It's not my main phone yet, though. Working on it... I use it
as a portable media player & web browser.

I love the a priori here - this question reminds me of that question "do
you still beat your wife?" in that there's no right answer. My answer: I
have never beaten my wife.

I've never used the tablets for email, the address book and calendar are
great.

> Any other interesting finds with the N900?

Avoid Transmission, it will not just use lots of power (which you get
warned about), it will make the table completely unresponsive while you
are downloading digital copies of the films that you already have on
DVD. Avoid Ovi Maps. It doesn't feel like a Fremantle application - I
would really love to see a port of Maemo Mapper to Fremantle (I hear
that the app is in need of a maintainer these days).

Cheers,
Dave.

Maybe it has a tendency to lock-up a bit quickly (or it's just me) ?

I think Marius refers to https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5337
(and maybe also https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5336 ) here.

The time-out is configurable. I like 30s myself, but if you want a
longer one, you can set it up.

Cheers,
Dave.
