Today!

And the longer people wait then the longer it will take :)

Mer isn't ready to fully replace Diablo on the NIT yet; but it is trivial to
install Mer on an SD card and switch between Mer and Diablo and help us test for
- and even fix - bugs.

Don't forget: Mer is a community release. It will be as good ... or as bad ...
as the *community* helps to make it.

For those unsure about what Mer is : http://wiki.maemo.org/Mer

Essentially, now that Diablo is end-of-life with no upgrades, Mer is a candidate
to replace it. Mer aims (amongst other things) to provide a Fremantle backport
to Mer devices.

Do the upgrades require a full tablet re-flash?
I can't find an answer on it?

Will standard diablo repository apps run?
From my reading, it appears that they will not?

With Diablo at end of life I feel like I am in a hold state on what to
do with the device and I keep wondering about just switching to Mer
completely, bugs and all. I just wonder if there are any full show stoppers?

Either that (though I don't think it's the best approach right now) or
install mer in an sd card.

No, they won't. Mer has its own repositories (with not a lot of software
available right now). It can also use ubuntu repositories, though,
unfortunately, software that has not been hildonised will have some
difficulty in running properly.

If you install to an sd card, you can dual boot (i.e. keep both diablo
and mer) and try for yourself.
I personally think that mer still has a long way to go but it looks very
promising.

I wouldn't suggest this yet - dual-booting is a sane next step.

That is what I did, the internal flash has Diablo, the internal card, Mer.

Mer looks interesting, and promising, but it is not ready for everyday
use. I would still try to use it more, but it suffers from the lack of
readily available applications to make it fun and somewhat useful for me.

I know that you can use the Ubuntu repositories but the average user
should have things showing up in the application manager.
That is what it is for.

There was a post somewhere that I have not been able to find again that
stated there were more repository apps available but there was an
intentional decision to keep the applications repository low so that Mer
itself could instead be tested.

Without the available applications to draw users, it seems somewhat more
of a task just to play with Mer itself. Applications will draw users,
and more application developers, and Mer itself would be tested as well.
