Out of memory for updates on N810

I am trying to install several updates but I get a message that I don't
have enough memory. One of the updates is an OS2008 update. Do I have
any options other than removing apps to free up space? Is there any way
to store apps in the internal memory or an external memory card?

Remove the documentation PDFs from the Documents folder, and the bundled media files from the Audio and Video clips folders.

If that doesn't do it, you'll need to remove some applcations (or move any personal media to a flash card).

Re: Out of memory for updates on N810 [In reply to]

So there is no possibility to mount the internal flashcard as a /home/
user on the N810 ?
Or even move the /usr to a external flashcard ?

Would be a nice hack todo enable though. Since the 256Mb of app
storage is quite limited.

Well, you COULD, but it's a stupid idea.

What you want to do is this: https://wiki.maemo.org/Booting_from_a_flash_card

I'm not sure of that. I haven't moved /usr but I have moved /home onto a
separate partition on the internal flashcard. That way as I switch between
different system roots I still keep my files available.

Definitely. It also helps avoid reflashing when you break something (leave
the original system on the internal flash so you can boot it to fix anything
nasty you have done to your main system).

But, that said, I haven't checked how this interacts with installing the new
OS update. Anyone tried it yet?

at least I do not get it to work. I'm not sure though if it is due to the OS
update. Might be a problem of the operator :) .

Cheers,

In theory there is no problem (except loosing modified initfs). Here is
one example how it should work
http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?p=212603#post212603
but there are failure reports too.

Frantisek,

ok, and got it. Now, does that mean that an individual who writes
"loose" when they mean "lose" is a "looser"?

He loses. He's a loser, because he is loose with his spelling.

I followed the instructions for the N810 with a 2GB external card. It
took a couple of re-boots but it now brings up a boot menu (if I hold
down the menu button when booting) and lets me boot from the external
card. It's not clear whether the debian package will work with a 4GB
card.

Thanks.

not sure what "debian package" means in this context, but my device boots from
a 4GB card.

Penguinbait created a debian package to automate cloning the flash
installation onto the external memory card (and add a boot menu to
select what to boot from). On the web page it says that the package is
designed to do this with a 2gb card and has an ambiguous message about
whether it will or won't work with cards of other sizes for the N810.
Initially I tried cloning to the 4gb card and it didn't seem to work. I
guess I was just one reboot away from it working. (The process often
involves several reboots.) When I put the 4gb card back in, it booted
perfectly from the 4gb card. Possibly the web page needs to be
corrected.
