Not ablt to install modest (and other applications) again

Hi,

i removed the modest package:
apt-get remove modest

apt removed the following packages too:

camera gpscamera libosso-email-interface modest numptyphysics osso-addressbook osso-email-interface osso-filemanager osso-filemanager-ui osso-global-search osso-imageviewer

After
apt-get update
i'm not able to install the packages again:

Nokia-N800-23-14:/# apt-get install modest
Paketlisten werden gelesen... Fertig
Abhängigkeitsbaum wird aufgebaut
Reading state information... Fertig

What repository i need? Here is a list of the repositories which are active:
Nokia-N800-23-14:/# cat
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/hildon-application-manager.list
deb http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/certified/ diablo user
deb http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/non-certified/ diablo user
deb http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/updates/diablo-1/ ./
deb http://repository.maemo.org/extras/ diablo free non-free

What i can do to install the packages again?

Thanks, Uwe

Re: Not ablt to install modest (and other applications) again [In reply to]

You could try downloading and forcing the apps to re-install, or just do a
backup, re-flash, and restore.

If you pre-download the BIN file the reflash only take about 2 min.

... and reinstalling all your apps and getting all the settings
changed back to the way you want them when the restore doesn't work
properly "only" takes you about 2 days... :-P

I won't be updating to Diablo for a long while yet. From what I've
been seeing, there are some very serious issues regarding things that
are extremely important to me that haven't yet been solved. I'm
reminded of the old saying, "don't fix what ain't broke."

Re: Not ablt to install modest (and other applications) again [In reply to]

Remember the wonderful old days when we all ran around logged in as root?
Remember the stupid things we did to our systems? The Nokia's give us the
opportunity to do that all over again. At least the mailing list isn't like
UseNet was; filled with read the FAQ you #$@!*. And all the wonderful people
that loved to make you feel small and stupid, now I have a small handhelp
that makes me feel stupid. ;)

Chris is correct, try his command and I'll bet it works.

I read that there will be removed all the packages listed. A few weeks
ago I did the same and there was no problem to install the packages again.

I'm not a long time Linux user, yes. But I don't do things because I'm
in a boring mood. ;-) I updated my Tablet with the 4.1 Version because
it should fix a modest bug ( https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3191
). Most packages where updated well but not the modest and tinymail
ones. I mailed me with an other user who updated his tablet - on his
tablet there was a new version of modest after the update. He used
exactly the same catalogues as I.
So I removed the modest application for a new installation of it from
the scratch. And yes, you are right I should do it with:

but it doesn't work. Apt told me that there's no installation package. I
don't know why and wrote the mail to this list.

I wish it would...

Is there anybody who knows how to reinstall modest by using a repository
and not a single .deb file or re flashing?

Re: Not able to install modest (and other applications) again [In reply to]

If you installed the latest update (as i did) (i presume you are using
modest for the imap support) you will notice that the builtin mail
does work with imap.

Dont install modest as a package. i presume that modest functionality
has been merged with the builtin mail app

Also if i remember correctly modest was going to be merged or replace
the the builtin mailapp

http://www.internettablettalk.com/2007/12/11/modest-beta-for-os2008-now-out/

Thats probably the reason why there is no modest installation package
in the repositories

Modest is now the email app ... You've already got it installed.

Yes, but the modest package is still alive how you can see here:
http://repository.maemo.org/pool/maemo4.1/free/m/modest/

But i can't browse trough the Nokia system catalogue:
http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/updates/diablo-1/

Maybe the start of modest-application is included into the packages
"libosso-email-interface" or "osso-email-interface" - i don't know :)

The only way to access the folders of system update directly is using
application manager or apt on the tablet. Is that correct?

After doing apt-get update all packages which contain modest are:
Nokia-N800-23-14:~# apt-cache search modest
modest-providers-data - Providers data for easy-setup of modest
modest-l10n-mr0 - modest marketing release package
modest-l10n - language files for modest
modest-search-plugin - modest search plugin for Global search application
libmodest-dbus-client - library wrapping modest's dbus interface

So I want to ask again: What is the repository which contains modest
(and some of the other packages listet in the first mail of this thread)?

Thanks in advance,
Uwe

Re: Not able to install modest (and other applications) again [In reply to]

i quote Jonathan Greene
"Modest is now the email app ... You've already got it installed."

And since you by using root forced a removal you have to install the
OTHER applications again
NOT modest

then after that is done you update with the latest update

And then you are peachy again

Yes, but all of the other applications (listet below) are having
unresolved dependencies or are not available.

Not available (but referenced in other packages):
gpscamera
libosso-email-interface
modest
numptyphysics
osso-addressbook
osso-email-interface
osso-filemanager
osso-filemanager-ui
osso-global-search
osso-imageviewer

Bad dependencies:
camera - libosso-email-interface not installable

The packages not available are located in which repository? Or are they
only located in the bin file and on those pages:
http://repository.maemo.org/pool/maemo4.1/free/

If somebody has an cloned OS too and a backup, can try to remove modest
package and try to install it again?

Thanks Uwe

Re: Not able to install modest (and other applications) again [In reply to]

Try enabling red pill mode to reinstall those applications.

But what i would do in your situation is actually doing a backup of
documents and such (NOT installed applications)

and do a reflash.

After that install the new update
and after that install the other apps you need.

Yes I'll do it... again. An i hope this time I'll be able to get a
version which i can backup as an basic system.

It's costs some time to reflash, istall bootmenu, reflash kernel (48Mhz
support), arrange all the applications in startmenu / personalmenu /
install voip-account / im-accounts / ... / install all the third party
applications and so on. I know I could reuse a lot the stuff stored in
the home directory. But which stuff? I'll have to look. All in all it's
*not* a *short time* I need to set up the tablet again and again and its
very frustrating that in diablo tot the answer to some strange problems
is only flashing the tablet again. (It's the second time in 2 month)

However, the bug in modest is fixed and so I'm looking forward to a new,
better and more stable installation :-)

Thanks for your tips, ciao Uwe

Re: Not able to install modest (and other applications) again [In reply to]

Well if i where you i would start making regular backups of the entire
machine incase this happens again for you.

A few pointers though. DONT install modest as a package

Since its included in the new update, incase you missed that.

your Home directory will get blanked during the reflash. Unless you
have mounted a flashcard as a home directory

If you read up some Linux scripting those backup tasks could be done
quite easily using cli commands.

Well, you can probably get all the packages you need back by adding
http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/updates/diablo/ to your
repository list, reinstalling, then removing it again.

Aw: Re: Not able to install modest (and other applications) again [In reply to]

Hi Ryan,

very good hint but a little bit to late. ;-) I did a reflash yesterday but modest is working now as you can see in the user-agent of these mail.

But your hint is good. Is there a history of the nokia repositories used for upgrades?

Regards, Uwe

Well, uh, diablo/ is the upgrade path for 23-14 and diablo-1/ for 30-2. Other than that, no other updates have been pushed via the repo.

I do wonder why Nokia though it would be a better idea to have a repo-per-version instead of having one repo that just contained the latest of everything.
