Re: how to put apps in 'My Selection' tab

Denis, thanks for the tip - works like magic.

I haven't found a way to delete skype, but I "disappeared" it by creating
a junk category and moving all the unneeded shortcuts there.

Re: how to put apps in 'My Selection' tab [In reply to]

That's what I also did, however, I'd like to blow it out completely. After
screwing up and needing to re-flash once, I'm take a bit more care. :)

I guess as I learn more about the n810, I'll figure out how to do it and
post it.

Thanks,

Denis

Dennis, I misunderstood you. What you need to do is:
apt-get remove skype-installer

Re: how to put apps in 'My Selection' tab [In reply to]

NO! Do not do this. osso-version-rx*4 depends on skype-installer, so
removing it will also remove that, and, tada, no more SSU updates. :)

Just take the .desktop file out of /usr/share/applications/hildon/

Re: how to put apps in 'My Selection' tab [In reply to]

Ryan,

Thanks! I'm very cautious about using apt-get remove, I've been burned
before. It seems to me that there are a LOT off applications with broken
removal settings.

Thanks,

Denis

I did just that some time ago to remove all proprietary teaser software.
What's those "SSU" updates ? Something different from apt-get update ?

It's how Nokia will push system and 1st-party software upgrades in the
future, so uninstalling osso-software-version means you wont get those
upgrades.[1] apt-get update just refreshes your repository list, what
you want to ask about is apt-get upgrade. The difference is that osso-
software-version is how the upgrades will be made available through
Application manager. You _may_ be able to upgrade using apt-get
upgrade, but it wont appear in Application manager.

Either way, the better solution is to either install and uninstall
Gizmo/Skype/Rhapsody, and that will take care of it, or to remove
the .desktop files for Gizmo/Skype/Rhapsody from /usr/share/
applications/hildon. There are a couple enhancement requests on
Bugzilla to allow these bundled applications to be uninstalled easily.

I removed that (and gizmo-installer, and a lot of other crud) as one of
the first things when I upgraded to diablo. I don't remember whether
osso-version-rx*4 got thrown out with the trash, but I do certainly
still get the automatic "Updates available" icon regularly.

Maybe I'm just too naiive, in expecting the dependencies to actually
make sense?

3rd-party upgrades don't have anything to do with SSU. Nokia hasn't
pushed any SSU updates yet, but you wont get them when they do if
you've removed osso-software-version-rx*4 (and trust me, it was
removed).

maemo is based on debian, as is ubuntu, so some of the concepts are
the same. osso-version-rx44 etc are metapackages. All they do is
depend on other packages, so ensure those packages are installed. In
ubuntu, there are packages like ubuntu-desktop which do the same.

If you remove this package, you will still get updates to all your
installed packages. However, if Nokia decide to add packages to the
base install during an SSU then you won't get the new packages
installed when you upgrade. This is an issue that has been a problem
with ubuntu upgrades in the past when people removed ubuntu-desktop
and then got a broken system when they upgraded.

Hope that helps,
Morgan

Alright, I stand corrected.

I just tried installing osso-software-version-rx34 again, but obviously
this package depends on stuff I specifically removed as I don't need it.
Not just skype and gizmo, but some of the games and the handwriting
input system. Any way to keep those off of my system and still get
system updates? Seems rather silly to me if you're forced to have
unimportant games installed if you want important system updates.

I know you can just install and remove skype and gizmo to get their
installers removed permanently, but can't I get to that state without
installing them at all?

Thank you for this info and link. Any details somewhere about how this
is done ? Im not familiar with flashed file systems - I suppose
upgrading the kernel for instance is not as simple as copying some
files, but apart from that I have no clue. Do you know how such a kernel
upgrade should happen in the future, step by step ?

I guess removing the .desktop files would just have removed the icons.
I dont know for the OP, but I wanted to remove completely all these files
from the n810 precious memory.

What a pity we had to pay for these apps ;)

Fortunately they are not that large:

Above sizes are rounded to "blocksize"; JFFS2 doesn't have blocks so
"ls -s" is not completely accurate. PNG files can't be compressed
by JFFS2, but binary and *.mo files probably can.

One might save more by disabling some repos before doing first
update to reduce stuff apt caches on disk. :-)

The osso-software-version-rx*4 is updated (it'll show up as some sort
of "System" or "Feature" upgrade in Application manager), and the new
version depends on the updated libraries, and applications, so
installing it will upgrade your system.

Flashing the kernel and initfs is handled by flash-and-reboot, initfs-
flasher and kernel-diablo-flasher, which are probably run as part of
the postinst or somesuch (I haven't investigated directly), and work
basically the same way as fanoush's initfs flasher.

But, basically, osso-software-version-rx*4 is updated, the updated
kernel is included as a dependency and the kernel gets flashed during
the system upgrade.

As Eero says, they're quite small, so you aren't really losing much
space, and deleting their .desktop files ensures you'll never have to
see them again. I do agree, though, with the principle of it which is
why voting on the appropriate bugs is a good plan. ;)

Re: how to put apps in 'My Selection' tab [In reply to]

No, only flash-and-reboot is used. the initfs-flasher and
kernel-diablo-flasher are only packages contain images for flashing.

Postinst isn't used, instead you can set a flash-and-reboot flag in control.

Shouldn't it really be marked 'essential' then?

Yes, and the main reason for this contortion is that flashing the initfs
should be followed immediately by a reboot. The kernel can safely be
flashed at any time, but it is done together with the initfs to avoid
the situation where the kernel is updated but the initfs is not.

If, hypothetically, there would be no initfs, we would just run
fiasco-flasher in the kernel-diablo-flasher postinst.

No, if you know what you are doing, there are good reasons to remove it,
or to replace it with a different meta package (such as the -unlocked
variants).

Only those packages should be essential that are required for the
package management itself to work.

For the maemo platform, that might still be a lot: everything needed to
start and use the Application manager (and X-Term?) could be considered
essential. But the whole OS would be a bit much.
