Updating maps N810

I have N810 with latest version OS2008. My maps application has version
2.2.6.377. Under Check for updates in the Application manager an update for
map shows up with version number 2.2.6.377-1. I want to update to it, but
get this error

Unable to install
Software contains updates to packages installed from a different source and
is likely to harm the system. Contact software author.

What to do?

It also look like the newest version is 2.3.1

Re: Updating maps N810 [In reply to]

Don't know -- same thing for the n800. I've been getting the same message for the weather report desktop app -- Since around Christmas. The map and weather apps seem to work fine, so I've got to the point of just checking to see if it's been cleared up once a week or so.

On a similar note -- my app manager seems to continually hang at downloading updated catalogs at about 1 meg.

One must gather that this is the sort of stuff one must come to expect when depending upon open source freeware support?

In other words, ignore it.

You have to activate the red pill mode.

What worked for me was to unistall the application called 'map' then
install it again from the update.

At http://internettablettalk.com I found similar reports.

OK... Red pill mode... That's nice...? Where's the link in your
email about where to get the red pill mode? =-O

Or, perhaps where's the simple to provide information in App Manager
message window (or anywhere else for that matter) of what "red pill
mode" is and how to get it? Risks... Benefits.... Why isn't the "red
pill mode" part of the end user main stream release and part of App
Manager?

IMHO, all of these code names and 'secret' modes (like Red Pill mode)
remind me of some nerdo secret decoder ring that comes inside a box of a
cereal that you can't find anywhere. Plus if you could find it, you
wouldn't want to eat it anyway. But you need the ring to keep things
working...?

FYI, this sort of junk makes very little sense to end-users who have
better things to do with their lives than hunting down some secret
decoder ring to get their nice end user device to operate properly. Gag
me for thinking it, but all of this dysfunctional BS is starting to make
the nonsense that Microsoft dumps into the marketplace look pretty darn
good...

Map is commercial. The only seriuos problems I had in 10 years of linux
use have been with closed-source/non-free apps and drivers.

Application Manager and Map are not open source and not really freeware
either. Maybe you had some other derogatory words in mind?

Seriously speaking, all these problems are probably fallout from the
repository mess during the holidays: I assume Application Manager has
downloaded a broken (unsigned) package and for some reason won't remove
it from the package cache so it would be downloaded again -- removing
and installing again will probably work.

Application Manager should of course just cope with the this, but I
don't see how ranting helps the situation (I'm mostly referring to your
post about Red Pill mode). If you just want to vent, maybe you could do
it in a way that doesn't involve so many other peoples mailboxes.
support [at] nokia, perhaps?

Another option is to login as root (using the various techniques like
"becomeroot" or installing openssh, which will prompt you to enter a
root password and then logging on with that via 'ssh root [at] localhos')
and then just do an 'apt-get install map'

Nokia screwed up in signing the original map app and then not signing
the upgrade. That check that the App Manager does is for your
protection from third-party apps trying to overwrite critical core
bits of the OS.

In this case, it gets in the way because Nokia forgot to sign the
update. Has anyone put this into bugzilla yet? Seems like a simple
fix.

/Mike
