How to install skype on the N810 with OS2008?

I just received my N810 today (hooray!). Now I'd like to install skype,
but I am unable to. I have tried to install it using the Skype menu
entry and directly in the Application manager. Either way, it tells me
this:

Unable to install skype.
Some application Packages required for the installation are
missing.

When I press the "Details" buttons it tells me this:

Unable to install skype
Application packages missing: libhildonfm2 (>= 1:1.9.49)
libhildonmime0 (>=1.10.1)

I have OS2008 Version 1.2007.42-19 installed.

I've installed the ssh server and looked around. Here's the contents
of /etc/apt/sources.list.d/hildon-application-manager.list:
deb http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/certified/ chinook user
deb http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/non-certified/ chinook user
deb http://catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com/updates/chinook/ ./
deb http://repository.maemo.org/extras/ chinook free non-free

Am I missing something?

Try flashing with the latest version of OS 2008 - version 2.2007.50-2

Sure. You're missing the following basic repository:

deb http://repository.maemo.org/ chinook free non-free

That's the SDK repo, _not_ a basic user repository.
Installing packages from there is certainly possible, but results may
vary. Quote from http://repository.maemo.org:
"These repositories are meant to be used with the 'apt-get' tool
only within the SDK environment"
Any tablet application that has a dependency to this repository should
be considered broken.

I would try Neils suggestion.

I have the same issue on N800 and the above advice will definitely not
work. The issue is that skype is looking for a libhildonfm2 version
1.9.49 and the available one is 1.9.46. I think I ran across a Debian
bug report somewhere on the arm architecture noting this issue. What I
don't understand is why I should need to re-flash to fix this (bumped
into the same advice on internettablettalk.com).

Hello,
I have not followed much discussion but I understand that you can not install skype connection favorites from a new nokia n810.
When he came to me the my nokia n810 could even installing skype by missing 2 libraries.

The additional repository in not the good way for the resolution of problem but the problem must be a bug in the OS infact the re-flashing of default firmware to the new version, I was able to quietly install skype

Try as I say I

You need to flash with the latest version of OS2008 because it
includes the new version (1.9.49) of libhildonfm2. Check the
changelist:

As far as I can tell OS version 2.2007.50-2 for N800 has libhildonfm2
1.9.49. See also
http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/changes/50-2_vs_44-4_comparison.html

Flashing to 2.2007.50-2 should work.

You can also contact Skype and ask them to release a working package for
previous OS versions. Installing libraries from the SDK repo may also
work, but don't count on it... I imagine flashing is the easiest choice.

Thanks, that's what I'll do!

Skype packages would clearly benefit from an external review process... they might get their act together if they were to find their packages being declined due to sloppy dependency matching and other basic errors. :)

Done and done.

Skype is now installed.

Which is exactly what I've done. As it happens, I don't want to call
Skype users, so Gizmo is fine as it lets me call regular landlines and
cellphones, and I don't have to put myself through the Skype
incompatibility chase.
