DO NOT RESTORE FROM A BETA BACKUP

http://www.maemoapps.com/2007/12/19/n800-updated-to-os2008-wheres-the-stylus-input/

I know I'm not alone with issues following a restore. Tread lightly.
A fresh install fixes you right back up.

I'm with Mike on this. Due to problems totally unrelated to the Beta
I restored from backup a total of 5 or 6 times during the beta phase.
Thank god too. Kept me down to 30 minutes a re-install.

According to comments in the corresponding bug:
https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2597

The problem happens only when restoring N810 backup to N800
(because they have / need to have different input settings)
and it can be worked around by doing following in xterm:

gconftool-2 -t bool -s /apps/osso/inputmethod/enable-stylus-im TRUE

Eero - That's a helpful command I could have used earlier this week!
My backup path in 2008 was from N810 prerelease N810 firmware update
to N800 2008 beta to current release 2008. stylus did not work on the
N800 until I did the fresh flash with minimal restore. I know the
similar input issues were found by other users based on the comments
I've gotten, the bugzilla report and on ITT. Just trying to help
those who may find similar problems.

I can appreciate that moving across non-synchronous software releases
from different hardware may lead to problems...

I finally found time to upgrade one of my N800's
(they are only allowed in his/hers combination's )

I upgrade from
RX-34_2007SE_4.2007.38-2_PR_COMBINE

to

RX-34_2008SE_4.2007.50-2_PR_COMBINE

I noticed that flashing will not start when the memory cards are inside the
N800
removed the cards and flashed the device

and did a total restore

No styllus text input

Only .finger keyboard is available

The line

gconftool-2 -t bool -s /apps/osso/inputmethod/enable-stylus-im TRUE

either true or false, does not work

I am missing one other 0 function

1/ I cannot layout the desktop

====
will reflash

=-=-

after reflash : no restore backup :

for the menu: only .finger layout
No stylus layout

so with six entries a menu fills the screen

stylus keyboard is now present.

at home layout option is not there. One cannot layout the position of the
applets.

I waded through the backup if i could find a wrong option, which disables the
stylus keyboard : not found.

I searched through the mail and only found the message that the finger
keyboard is gone after putting a N810 backup on a 2008 N800

Kind regards

This is the expected behaviour now, isn't it? OS 2008 always has the
large menu layout now, doesn't it? Certainly, that was my impression.

The annoying thing is the lack of finger keyboard detection and the
unresponsiveness (mis reading of taps and constant doubling of typing)
for the finger keyboard. OS 2007's was quite good, but OS 2008 is much,
much less usable.

Matt

And for the stylus keyboard too.

fase two

I restored the backup
Now all parts individually

after each restore i checked if the stylus keyboard disappeared

It did not..

Great..

Now is there a possibility to have a stylus menu ?
Finger menu is too impractical ( also in contacts !)
for so many selections one has to scroll

and

scolling should at least be possible by page ...
