Wikipedia on the n800

Hi Guys,

I'm new to the list, a quick google didnt find anything useful, so i hope
this isnt a repeated question.

I'm looking to get wikipedia on my n800. I got an 8gb SDHC handy too.

My previous experience with my zaurus was with wikie2Zaurus (
http://home.arcor.de/mbaumeister/wiki2zaurus/), was a simple enough hack
then. I was wondering if there are any other solutions out there ? I was
hoping to do without the apache/httpd portion, but compression is badly
needed and short of doing a cramfs (or equivalent) and a recompile of the
kernel, I've not seen any other ways. My other problem is also the huge
*number* of files that will be generated is huge, and using xfs might be a
better fs to handle.

Anyone knows of a good compressed file system that is support by the n800
(if possible by default)

Any pointers to a good information source will be greatly appreciated.

Elvin

There are projects that put wikipedia snapshots onto DVD and CDRom
images. These have all the links converted to relative links so pages
can be browsed on the CD without needing a webserver.

Just download download the *.iso, as well and open/mount it. Then copy
it's contents to a large enough SD Card and you should be good.

Here's one such project. There may be others:

I didn't test this approach myself but a possible solution to your
problem is to run a dictd server on your device. Here are a few pointers:

Convert Wikipedia SQL dumps to the dictd database format
http://www.industree.org/guaka/wiki/Wik2dict

Dictd for maemo (server)
https://garage.maemo.org/projects/dictd/

Maemo dict (client application)
https://garage.maemo.org/projects/maemodict/

If the fact of having to be online is not a problem for you, you can
find a list of public servers which provide Wikipedia databases here :
http://luetzschena-stahmeln.de/dictd/index.php

All this may be overkill compared to Paul's solution though.

I forgot to mention a few details.

- Each dictionary provided by a dictd server has only two files: the
index (not compressed) and the dictionary data (can be compressed using
gzip). That would address your concern about size and number of files.

- You can of course run a dictd server on your linux box and look up
words from your device over your local wifi network.

- The DICT protocol is "plain text oriented" so it won't be possible to
display pictures with that solution. On the other hand, it may be an
advantage thanks to the reduced size if you decide to install the server
on your device.

Found this today. Just glanced over it, but it looks like you might need to
do some coding and definitely compiling, but...
