N800: Notes from the Field - A Successful Radio Workaround

All,

for many years my Saturday's have been at least partially occupied by
our childrens' sports activities and in the springtime that means either
soccer (aka football) or lacrosse. Today was no different except that I
forgot to bring my FM radio + earbuds to listen while watching the
contest. Actually what happened was that I got the "bums rush" from my
daughter who would not tolerate my going back in the house to get one
more item that I had forgotten because we were pushing the limit
timewise. My first thought was, hey, no problem, I can use the FM tuner
on my N800 which I DID bring along as well as my mobile phone. But the
flaw in that strategy, I then realized was: no earbuds, therefore no
antenna, therefore no FM. Bummer. The I realized, wait a minute, I
could use my N800 tethered to my mobile phone's EVDO service as a packet
radio. In the U.S. most of the larger market public radio stations also
have a Internet feed and sure enough the feed for my favorite station
came through loud and clear through the semi-cheesy N800 speakers (how
good can tiny speakers be?) with a volume and clarity sufficient to
overcome the ambient background noise one would expect at an event like
this.

Now this experience while satisfying was not perfect. Here are the
problems I experienced:

1. As anyone working with these kinds of devices knows, with strong
daylight it is almost impossible to navigate a screen menu. This is
true for my mobile phone as well as the N800. I don't know if there
is a solution for this problem. Sometimes you have to guess from
memory where the correct checkbox/icon is located.

2. I dropped the N800 a few times on the grass/dirt and that
experience reminded me how absurd it is that Nokia has, as far as I
can tell, STILL has not released the leather case that they show at
their www site and that would provide better protection for the
device while it is in use.

Of course the bandwidth required for Internet/packet radio does not
really push the limits of a service like EVDO or HSDPA which explains
why during an hour of listening I did not perceive any dropouts. On the
other hand I have no idea of how many other people in the vicinity were
also contending for EVDO bandwidth. Each season I notice a growing
proportion of individuals at these events who have some kind of
smartphone, typified by the RIM Blackberry.

This is annoying me also - the case was "due in Q1" so it's now very very late. Expansys UK had the case listed on their site but now have it showing as discontinued[1] as they were unable to acquire any stock - it was originally offered at £284.95 (almost $600!) and it never became available at a realistic price.

I'd like to know if the Nokia N800 Case is vapourware as I *need* protection for my N800 screen and the official Nokia Case looked to be the best candidate as I don't need an all enclosing padded leather case.

I think the soft case shipped with the N800 makes the situation worse. I
dropped my N800 two times (without damaging it!) because it slips out of
the soft case. Now I use a neoprene soft case with a zip. The alu case
of the N770 wasn't ideal either, but I think it was better than the soft
case supplied with the N800.

I suddenly feel better about not using that case.

Hi,

I've got my n800 last week and i have the same feeling too - the soft case
is more like eye candy than something i can rely on. I even found out if i
look the screen and slide the device in the case, if the screen is tapped it
will still brighten up as if it is ready to be used, although i have
manually locked the screen.

kind of funny i must say, perhaps i am just a newbie :)

That problem is fixed with the new firmware update... IMHO, worth it
for that reason alone. :-)

Re: N800: Notes from the Field - A Successful Radio Workaround [In reply to]

Hi,

well, i think the N800 must have somehow read this mail itself - during my
trip last week, the n800 just suddenly refuse to unlock. I can press the
power button + square button as many times as i like, and the tablet will
not want to unlock. At the end i chose to remove the battery.

it turned out to be a big mistake (but what other choices do i have?) - i
ended up with the n800 rebooting itself mysteriously over and over again.
This symptom repeats with or without memory card. As soon as i get Internet
connection again, i found out some had such rebooting issues too. So i have
no choice but to reflash the unit.

now i have the latest flash installed, without all the applications i have
installed earlier. time to reinstall things.

at least now i have no issue with the screen being turned on alright ;)

regards,
wahlau

This happened to me twice. It's not pleasant. The latest firmware
fixed the "won't unlock" bug, thankfully.

At least that part never happened to me.

I created a web page for my own convenience, with links to .install
files for all the applications I found useful:
http://mg.pov.lt/770/reflash-n800.html

New firmwares appear from time to time, and it's easier to upgrade when
you've all the steps written down in front of you.

Marius,

thanks for creating/sharing that www page.

Concerning your wishlist item "VNCserver", have you tried using xllvnc?

For my own needs it seems to work quite well with Tightvnc on the client
side aside from the problem of not registering stylus clicks on the left
~cm column of the screen.

Nor does x11vnc enable <RETURN> for most applications, or allow web
scrolling using the mouse with many (including Nokia sites) web sites. I
still use it though as it is very useful.

Well it is too late but what worked for me when keys were dead in first
FW is to eject the camera. Even when keys were locked ejecting camera
executed default application as usual and then keys suddenly started to
work and I could unlock the device.

Hi,

well, it's never too late to share :)

anyway, we know now at least removing battery at runtime is a big NO NO. I
have not tried ejecting the camera trick, and wonder if i can do the same
now with the latest firmware.

now i am going to reinstall things, wish me luck :)

It should be fixed. Or at least it didn't happen to me yet while it
happened about 3 times with older firmware. Also linux kernel changelog
contains following line in kernel source package for newer release

* TSC2301 keypad: workaround the keypad scanner stuck HW bug

I guess this might be related to that issue.
