.profile, .ashrc, ... ???

re-Hi!
I'm trying to define some aliases on startup but I'm not able to find
the proper way to do it. I've tried the following as mentioned
elsewhere on the Net but it doesn't work (except when connecting
throught SSH):
/home/user/.profile:
ENV=$HOME/.ashrc
export ENV
/home/user/.ashrc:
alias su='sudo gainroot'
alias ll='ls -l'
Any idea? TIA.
