Changing chinook support to archive mode

Hi,

It has been quite a while since diablo became the successor of chinook.

I think it is time to make the chinook repository read-only and close down
the builder instance for it.

maemo.org would then support the latest stable releases for each device
generation out there.

gregale for 770
diablo for N800 and N810
fremantle for N900

This would let us concentrate on improving the features for the platforms
that are actually in use.

Comments welcome.

I support that decision.

I actually don't know why this wasn't done earlier. Aren't chinook and
diablo 100% binary compatible?

I still support GPE on chinook and I build new releases for both chinook and
diablo (as well as mistral and bora). It has been over a year since I last
released GPE (although my daily builds repository builds against chinook each
night) -- but I am planning to do so again soon (with several bug fixes
discovered during the Fremantle work).

But I don't know how many chinook users there are left out there -- at one
time there were several who claimed that diablo introduced problems and they
reverted back to chinook.

It may be worth a note to maemo-users explaining that this is happening and
that although chinook users will still be able to install apps from their
repository, there will be no new apps or updates. If there is a chorus of
dissent you could reconsider.

I would object, however, if the archived repositories (including the SDK) were
taken offline -- I would like to ability to build against chinook if I really
had to.

No. Applications built for chinook will (generally) run on diablo but not the
other way around (the issue is library version numbers being incremented).

That is generally true of the Maemo N.0 and N.x releases and is why my nightly
GPE builds build against bora (to support bora and gregale -- Maemo 3.x),
chinook (to support chinook and diablo -- Maemo 4.x) and fremantle. However,
I do admit that for Maemo 2.x they build against mistral (Maemo 2.2) -- there
may have been a good reason for it at the time, I can't remember. In any
case, I have announed that the next GPE release will be last one which
supports Maemo 2 and I will drop the mistral build at that time.

I plan to continue with the nightly builds building against chinook even after
Niels makes this change. But with the chinook autobuilder turned off I will
not be able to update the version of GPE in chinook extras in future, only in
diablo extras.

I'm still building for all three platforms because I think there are
still a couple of people using Chinook out there. I know at least one
active tmo member who is always testing Conboy on Chinook.

Why not just keep it running? Does it create so much extra work? Maybe
we could look at some stats, like how many Chinook packages have been
downloaded within the last 30 days?

Cheers!
Conny

Hi,

me too. All my projects are also built for chinook and i even still
have an n800 running chinook for testing reasons.

If chinook is officially be retired, i'll just flash my n800 to diablo
and forget about chinook. I am fine with that.
