Yes, you can, and there are already some commercial apps installed on
N900 by default, for example Documents To Go.

It is expected that Ovi market platform will be ready for Maemo
devices soon, so you can develop commercial apps for Maemo platform,
and you'll have a channel to monetize them easily.

If you have more questions, feel free to ask ;)

installer.

Re: Commercial applications at Maemo [In reply to]

Ok, my fault, since I don't have a n900 I can't be 100% sure if it is
installed by default or not, but I've seen it in some videos.

Thanks,

Re: Commercial applications at Maemo [In reply to]

If I use C++ and GTK to do a commercial application to Maemo, is it
necessary pay any license to Nokia or to other company?

Thanks,

Felipe.

No, you don't need to pay licence to Nokia.

You can use C++, GTK, Hildon, Qt etc without paying any
licence. Most of components are LGPL that mean that you
can link them to closed source applications.

Just reminder, commercial and closed source are different
things. It is possible to make closed but free of charge
applications or it is possible to make commercial open source
applications.

GPL and LGPL does not say that you cant make commercial
applications.

Of course, if you choose to use a commercial service to distribute or sell
your application (e.g. Ovi Store) or you want to purchase consultancy or
training (e.g. from Forum Nokia) you may have to pay fees for that. This
list would not be the right place to ask about those: Forum Nokia
(www.forum.nokia.com) is probably the place to find out about those.

If you want to distribute your application free of charge (even though it
may not be under a free software licence) you will be able to use the
non-free section of the maemo.org Extras repository, with no fees. We have
not quite worked out the process for doing that but if you are interested we
would be happy to work with you.

Make sure you understand the terms and conditions of the libraries
that you use. Specifically the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_General_Public_License
. Look closely at the license for GTK+ as well, and read this about
that license: http://www.gnu.org/licenses/why-not-lgpl.html

You should also note that Nokia is developing a system for using their
commercial Ovi service to sell applications on Maemo as well.

Regards,

Jeremiah
