maemo.org merchandise

There's been a lot of talk on this subject but little or no action, so I
decided to start now and maybe beg forgiveness later.

Toni Nikkanen has graciously agreed to allow use of his photos from the
Maemo Summit 2009, so for the sake of theming and continuity I have
extended the theme on the maemo.org community flyer (http://maemo-daemons.org/maemo-org_community-flyer2_Maemo5.pdf)
to products like tee shirts, mugs, et al.

You can view a mockup of a maemo.org storefront here:
http://www.cafepress.com/cynicalsigns/7050511

Some things to keep in mind:

* Nothing shown is absolutely final.  I am still incorporating feedback
on the flyer, and discussing photos with Toni... as well as
experimenting on cafepress.

* There is no final decision on a store provider.  I am using cafepress
for example only.  Zazzle is another alternative, as is a
community-run custom store.  For now cafepress works well for
proof-of-concept.

* Members are welcome to order from the prototype store, but I offer no
guarantees of product quality.  Any money made will first help defray
my store costs ($7 USD per month) and then go into a fund for
maemo.org outreach activities (flyer materials, etc) which I am
currently paying out of my own pocket.

* I am awaiting thoughts from maemo.org/Nokia employees and the council
on the best solution for this need going forward.  That includes
store accounts, paypal, etc.  Hello people!

* Discussion on a maemo.org mascot continues (http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=28965)
7 months after inception.  That's just crazy.  There was a suggestion
to base it off a Finnish newt (natural orange and black coloration)
and personally I think that's a winner.  I will create a design that
follows the "ae" of the text logo and float it for consideration.

In summary, enough chat, time for work.  I don't mind doing it at all; I
love this stuff.  And if anyone takes issue with what I do, let the
flames commence-- but be prepared to offer a solid alternative otherwise
I'm deaf.  ; )

Thanks for the feedback Valerio.  Did you see my earlier email about
paypal, cafepress, etc?  So far zero answers... : (

There definitely needs to be some sort of "org" around maemo.org.

I think for a immediate solution, paypal should be the better option,
but since we're here we should consider the creation of a no-profit
association for our community, that could help dealing with the
merchandising money, donations, etc. It has some advantages, but also
some disadvantages, so need to be discussed first :)

Paypal is indeed a good solution when it comes to international
payments. It eliminates issues with credit cards and such, and just
provides us with a simple payment system. I would even recommend not
just thinking of it as a temporary solution.

With regards to the non-profit organisation around maemo.org, this has
been discussed a few times, however never in front of an audience as
far as I can remember. A few ideas were thrown around, from what I
remember:
- Country of the organisation can be anywhere in Europe really, prime
candidates were (not in any particular order): France, Netherlands, UK
& Ireland, Spain. The reason for this is that those country have a
strong community presence, with a few members being highly regarded
and respected, with positions that would allow them to manage
something like this.

- My personal preference went towards having one of the paid
contributors take responsibility of the financial management of the
organisation.

- I am not aware of US laws regarding organisations, however I see no
issues with having a separation and having two equivalent
organisations operating on each side of the ocean. International
organisations get very complex and hard to manage very quickly.

- Financial results should be published openly to community members
on a quarterly basis. These results/numbers are not confidential,
however displaying them publicly would serve no purpose.
