#maemo IRC cloaks

After 18 long months we finally managed to get the group contact form
processed for #maemo. Niels is now the primary organization contact
with Freenode for maemo.org. The big advantage, other than finally
having control over our own damn channel, is that we now get free
Freenode cloaks to hand out to contributors and employees.

I've written up a proposal on the wiki outlining some general
guidelines for cloak distribution and format.[1] Hopefully some
interested folks can review it and see what they think. The primary
change I'm considering is lowering the karma threshold from 1000 to
500 since 1000 excludes more helpful contributors than I'd like.

Thanks!

This might be a silly question, but what does an IRC cloak do? Is it a
veil of invisibility or something?

Cheers,
Dave.

Dave,

LOL, I just asked the same question on the "Talk" part of the new
wiki page. Guess I'm not nearly as stupid as I thought I was. ;-)

Wikipedia has a useful overview: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC/Cloaks

Essentially it provides 3 things:

1. Privacy, since your IP is no longer displayed for all of the world.
2. Bling, since you know you've arrived when you've got a maemo.org
cloak. ;)
3. Identification, it helps other users spot important and useful
people in the organization.

OK, Freenode couldn't do maemo.org without another group contact form
being filed so we've gone with /Maemo/community/ instead of /maemo.org/.

The staff and council cloaks have been handed (congratulations to
Stskeeps ;)), but we'll have to discuss how we want to handle the
contributor cloaks. The list of maemo.org members with > 500 karma
looks like this:

achipa
andy80
anidel
atmasphere
baloo
barbieri
bergie
bundyo
conny
ed_
fanoush
feri
fiferboy
florian
fms
framstag
fredoll
jaffa
jatikka
jku
khertan
konttori
kulve
lardman
lbt
lcuk
lma
lucianomw
mgedmin
mikkov
milhouse
murrayc
mvo
nakkebar
ossi1967
pipeline
pycage
qgil
qwerty12
sarev0k
sjgadsby
thoughtfix
thp
timeless
timsamoff
yerga
zerojay

All of you are eligible for a /Maemo/community/contributor/ cloak. It
requires only that you have registered your nickname with Freenode (/
quote nickserv register <password> <email>) and that you indicate your
interest. We may want to do a mass emailing to these folks to make
sure we don't miss anybody who doesn't browse this list.

X-Fade's the man in charge of the channel, and he's a bit busy at the
moment what with Maemo 5 just around the corner and whatnot so it may
take a while before we start handing out vanity plates. For now we can
at least confirm with those of you who are interested. So respond to
the list or email me directly if you are and I'll compile a list of
people for X-Fade to submit when he has time.

There are a number of Nokians in this list (you know who you are ;)).
You have the option of going with either a contributor cloak (/Maemo/
community/contributor/) or a cloak that indicates your association
with Nokia more directly. Something like /Maemo/<department>/
<position>/, /Maemo/<product>/<position>/, /Maemo/<position>/, or more
generic like /Maemo/employee/. It's mostly up to you (although any
guidelines you can recommend would be appreciated). This offer also
extends to any other Maemo Devices employees who would like cloaks.

If you're on the list or work for Maemo Devices and are interested in
a cloak then let me know and we'll get you set up sometime soon.

I'm very pleased to be in this list, and I've a question (please don't
kill me :D ):

ehm... what is a "cloak" and what is used for? I'm on IRC since 1997
more or less, but I used other networks and so I've never used this
funcionality. Could you please explain me better? Maybe other people
could be interested too :)

Thanks and best regards.

Hey, somebody put together a karma calculator for Midgard to parse the
line numbers and we'll implement it. ;)

Re: #maemo IRC cloaks [In reply to]

Hi all,

any updates about IRC cloaks? Maybe I'm missing the discussion page?

Best regards,

http://wiki.maemo.org/Task:maemo.org_IRC_cloaks exists but it's missing
an update.

Cloaks have been in use for a few weeks on IRC.

I don't get my cloak applied when I'm connected, even if I was in the
list of "elegibles" for the cloak, even if I replied with a "+1 for
me!!!", even if I authenticate myself when I connect to Freenode IRC
servers.

Could you give a look if everything is working fine? Thanks :)

Hey, Andrea! ;)

I gave a partial list to X-Fade before he left for vacation last
month, not sure if your name was on it or not. I believe the Freenode
people were confirming with the recipients before applying the cloak,
so it's possible they may simply have missed you.

I've put your name back on the list of people who still need cloaks
and I'll toss it over to X-Fade today or tomorrow.
