URGENT! Updating the info for flashing

Hi,

We will publish officially the Maemo 5 sales release *very soon*. I just
overlooked the fact that the public documentation for flashing is quite
outdated and many people will look for it e.g. the Summit participants
that got a pre-production N900 with beta software.

Flasher 3.5 was released recently with support for all linuxes but also
Windows and mac OS X:
http://maemo.org/news/announcements/maemo_flasher-3-5_tool_final_for_fremantle_and_diablo_released/

The software can be downloaded from
http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/maemo-dev-env-downloads.php

The documentation, however, is only reachable in the installation files.
Nothing that Google is aware of.

Because of this, http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_tablet_firmware is
outdated specially for Windows and Mac users.

http://wiki.maemo.org/Flasher is ok-ish for core Linux users since the
3.0 instructions mostly work for 3.5 without changes, but it says
nothing about Windows and Mac.

It says nothing about flashing the eMMC either. This is something that
in principle regular users don't need to be aware of, but it's very
important for those that got a pre-production device since they will
need to reflash the eMMC in order to get the N900 as it comes out of the
sales box.

I'm not even a Windows/Mac user so (as shameful as it is) I reckon
having no clue now about how these users are supposed to flash their
devices. Can I beg some (urgent) help from the Nokians and community
writers related to the pages linked above? It will save us many
questions in lists and forums.

Thank you!

Re: URGENT! Updating the info for flashing [In reply to]

Isn't the flashing with windows done with NSU?

or have I understood something wrong?

I could take a look at the wiki this evening probably and might do some
updates to flashing articles.

The OS X section still applies for the most part.

Do you mean that 770Flasher still plays well with

maemo_flasher-3.5_2.5.2.2_i386.dmg 264969 Maemo Flasher-3.5 Tool for
Fremantle and Diablo, installation package for Mac OS X (Snow) Leopard
(x86, 32-bit)
maemo_flasher-3.5_2.5.2.2_ppc.dmg 248813 Maemo Flasher-3.5 Tool for
Fremantle and Diablo, installation package for Mac OS X Leopard (PPC,
32-bit)

?

And that "2.0" can be changed by "3.5" at
http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_tablet_firmware#Console_with_flasher-2.0
?

RE: URGENT! Updating the info for flashing [In reply to]

Hi,

Flasher-3.5 has been documented in download page

http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/maemo-dev-env-downloads.php?f=Readme_Maemo_Flasher-3.5.txt

and as said in that readme file all installation packages include also documentation so I see no big problems here.

* FILES INCLUDED

- flasher-3.5 - flasher binary file (flasher-3.5.exe for Windows)
- libusb - USB library (only for Windows and Mac OS X installations)
- COPYING_LGPL.txt - license text for libusb (only for Windows and Mac OS X installations)
- License_Agreement.txt - license and disclaimer text for flasher binary
- Help.txt - short command line help
- Readme_Maemo_Flasher-3.5.txt - this file

*****

Same Flasher-3.5 documentation from readme and help.txt files is meant for all operating systems (as the tool is the same :).

We do not have Flasher-3.5 documented elsewhere because we do not have final Fremantle Developer Guide yet.
http://wiki.maemo.org/Documentation/Maemo_5_Developer_Guide/Development_Environment/Maemo_Flasher-3.5

Cheers,
//Jarmo

The problem is the incoherency between the documentation file and the
documentation in the wiki (which is linked to from the main tablet-dev
web-page). Things must be consistent and correct.

I am moving the Flasher readme file into the wiki in the Flasher page,
and we must review (as Quim said) the Updating the firmware page. Like
him, I have no Windows or Mac to try this on, so for the moment we will
be relying on the readme being accurate & checked.

Cheers,
Dave.

Re: URGENT! Updating the info for flashing [In reply to]

Hi,

(review of issues with tablets-dev front page)

On http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/ the link to "Maemo 5 for Nokia N900"
doesn't work: http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N900.php gives a 404.
The link to the flashers is still http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/d3.php
which looks very similar to the maemo-dev-env-downloads.php page.

The link to maemo-de-env-downloads.php says "Maemo 4.1.2 Diablo kernel
patch and new kernel image for USB Networking on Windows, ver 0.4" - is
that correct?

Can someone with access please update this page to make sure the
information is correct? And if we're not sending people to flasher-3.0
any more, I recommend removing the d3 link altogether and indicating
that the flasher is in the dev-tools bundle.

Cheers,
Dave.

is this eMMC flashed if people use flasher-3.5 and .bin image under
Linux? Some users of pre-preduction devices did this and their device
was flashed without any problem...

This is a txt file behind a user acceptance. Google will never find
that, leave alone spider and cache it.

Google sends people to http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_firmware

It is already quite up to date thanks to the people that helped this

As a matter of fact we have also
http://wiki.maemo.org/Documentation/Maemo_5_Developer_Guide/Development_Environment/Maemo_Flasher-3.5

Flashing is not only something for developers, but perhaps we want to
have only one page with the canonical information.

Was missing, now back in it's place.
Updating things makes them pop in and out of existance.

which looks very similar to the maemo-dev-env-downloads.php page.

[jot] This link is valid only for Nokia 770 users. N8x0 and N900 users will get their flasher-3.5 from official Maemo Development Environment Downloads page here
http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/maemo-dev-env-downloads.php

The link to maemo-de-env-downloads.php says "Maemo 4.1.2 Diablo kernel
patch and new kernel image for USB Networking on Windows, ver 0.4" - is
that correct?

[jot] Yes this is correct and official Diablo fix for development environment. Diablo device kernel needs to be updated USB Networking to function with Windows host PC. This is generic bug in Linux kernel (version Diablo has by default) that got fixed to kernel upstream and that I back ported to Diablo.
[jot] Fremantle version of kernel includes this fix by default.

Can someone with access please update this page to make sure the
information is correct? And if we're not sending people to flasher-3.0
any more, I recommend removing the d3 link altogether and indicating
that the flasher is in the dev-tools bundle.

[jot] We should remove other than Nokia 770 flashers from that d3 page (and put them here http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/old-maemo-dev-env-downloads.php).

[jot] Or maybe somebody could test if flasher-3.5 tool can actually be used also for N770 flashing as I have not tested that at all. Maybe we are lucky and flasher-3.5 supports also Nokia 770 hw and images.

Cheers,
//Jarmo

Cheers,
Dave.

I think the link should include something about "Including utilities for
reflashing firmware" or something similar.

At least change the link so that it says "Flashers for Nokia 770"
instead of just flashers? Perhaps organise the page so that all the N900
stuff is up top, and the rest is underneath in a "Legacy firmare &
tools" section?

Cheers,
Dave.

HI Dave,

Good proposals for new link names. Tero Kojo and Daniel Wilms are only ones who are able to update this page.http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/

Re: URGENT! Updating the info for flashing [In reply to]

Seriously, this is all SO confusing (and always has been) for regular (i.e., Not dev) users. Regular users should never havek to visit a "download" page, let alone a wiki page if they don't want to.

A CD should be included in the device package that contains installable GUI "device management" apps for Linux, Windows, and Mac. These apps should have an auto-update preference (on launch, every week/month/whatever). The app should not only recognize the current device firmware version, but be able to download and install a new one if needed. It should also be able to perform the same bakup/restore functionality that the device does...

I know you all have an iPhone/Pod or have used one before. All of this stuff should be brainless and require very little documentation at all. Especially, not documentation about a 770 flasher for Mac, when most new N900 users won't even know what "770" or "N8xx" (or even "WiMAX") means -- all of this is on the top of the wiki page.

Anyway... Just my two cents. And, I know I'm jumping into this conversation late (or, early, if we start talking about Harmattan).

If the installer for the Mac OS X flasher simply offered to to display
Readme_Maemo_Flasher-3.5.txt at the end of the installation procedure,
that might be a small start. I suspect many Mac OS X users may not be
accustomed to looking in /usr/share/doc/, a directory hidden from the
Finder, for instructions.

Well there is at least the Windows Nokia PC suite which will do
backing-up, synchronising, etc.

I do think that users should be able to do more from the PC though (and
preferably from a unified piece of sw), e.g. updating, installing sw, as
well as the backup and sync already provided. Something like the PsiWin
stuff for the Psion.

Seriously, this is all SO confusing (and always has been) for regular (i.e., Not dev) users. Regular users should never havek to visit a "download" page, let alone a wiki page if they don't want to.

[jot] Our Flasher-3.5 tools is dveloper tool only. As I wrote in announcement (http://maemo.org/news/announcements/maemo_flasher-3-5_tool_final_for_fremantle_and_diablo_released/) it may be that also technology oriented end-users use them but thery really are not for regular end user.

[jot] I have proposed that someone should implement very simple GUI (with Qt or Python so that same GUI works in Linux, Windows and Mac) that I could include to the instalaltion package. Only after that flasher tools can be considered as end-user tool.

[jot] Maybe this (automatic download of image file) could be added to the flasher GUI... We anyhow have implemented this already for Eclipse IDE (we have GUI wizard for flasher in Eclipse IDE) so you can check from Eclipse how to implement that for end users.

[jot] No much comments for thie. I am responsible of developer environment but somebody else is responsible of end-user environment for platform/devices.

Anyway... Just my two cents. And, I know I'm jumping into this conversation late (or, early, if we start talking about Harmattan).

[jot] A lot can still be done to Fremantle while waiting Harmattan...

Cheers,

//Jarmo

RE: URGENT! Updating the info for flashing [In reply to]

Hi,

Thanks about feedback. This change to add option to display readme/help files to user after installation if very good (at least for Windows and Mac).

I will forward this enhancement request to the new project manager who is now responsible of Maemo flasher tools after me.

Cheers,
