Missing categories in Bugzilla

Ok, timsamoff and I had a little twitterwar (kidding you Tim) over
Bugzilla's current capabilities regarding Maemo bugs not directly related
to software (N900 hardware, accessories, product packaging, etc).  Tim
assured me Maemo Bugzilla could already handle what I wanted to report.

Maybe I'm thick-headed, but I still don't see the categories.  In fact,
when I go to start a new bug, I see:

All:

 Show all products

Extras:

For Non-Nokia products that are available from the Maemo Extras
repository

Maemo Official Applications:

For applications managed by Maemo Software (a division of Nokia)

Maemo Official Platform:

For platform software managed by Maemo Software (a division of Nokia)

Websites:

For problems related to the maemo.org and maemo.nokia.com websites.

All:

 Show all products

Extras:

For Non-Nokia products that are available from the Maemo Extras
repository

Maemo Official Platform:

Websites:

For problems related to the maemo.org and maemo.nokia.com websites.

Nothing specific to hardware, accessories or packaging.  Selecting "All"
doesn't even get me what I need.

For those familiar with the program, Nokia Pilots (formerly True Test)
provides channels for every type of defect imaginable.  Based on Nokia
handing out 300 N900s in complete sales packs, and our slowly growing
involvement with Nokia development, I think we need the same setup.  I
have some hardware and sales pack issues to report but no apparent means
of doing so.

Am I missing something, or is Bugzilla?  Andre?

Re: Missing categories in Bugzilla [In reply to]

Actually, we were having a discussion based around the capabilities of
Bugzilla & Brainstorm. If I'm not mistaken (although I may be) you said
neither fulfilled both functions for hardware and/or software and I said
they did.

I meant this by the fact that Bugzilla is for software and Brainstorm
contains a category for hardware.

Sorry if I misunderstood... I thought we were speaking about both tools
and not just Bugzilla.

For those not familiar with Nokia Pilots:
http://www.nokia.com/developers/success-stories/nokia-pilots/public-faq

I agree on your generic request, but it shouldn't be addressed by adding
"missing categories" to maemo.org bugzilla but adding Maemo related
campaigns to Nokia Pilots.

The reason not to have these categories in bugs.maemo.org is that it's
fairly impossible that someone related with devices, hardware, packaging
will follow those components and discuss problems openly. I believe that
even Nokia Pilots is based on a closed dialog vis-a-vis.

Maybe we could have started this with the 300 pre-production devices in
the Maemo Summit, but there was no time. Also we did want to have the
software bugs reported in bugs.maemo.org and not anywhere else.

Real customers have the Nokia Care channels and retailers to report
problems on devices, accessories and sales packs. Now you didn't get a
sales device so yes, the situation is tricky. If the problems are
relevant send them to me and I'll forward. If they are proposals for
improvement you can use http://maemo.org/community/brainstorm/ - where
there are categories for hardware and accessories.

Re: Missing categories in Bugzilla [In reply to]

Thanks Quim.  I'll follow the protocol you describe.  You're right that
our situation is "tricky" so I had a suspicion there might be problems in
expanding Maemo Bugzilla... I only suggested what I did because I knew
that as I was leaving Nokia there was a movement to open Pilots up to the
public (but to what degree I am uncertain, especially since the program
has been quiet for months).

Also, it may have appeared like I was blaming timsamoff for
miscommunication.  Nothing is further from the truth-- the fault was mine
for trying to get points across in twitter.  ; )
