[lvs-users] Has anyone managed to get the loopback adapter working on Windows 2008 for DR mode?

Has anyone managed to get the loopback adapter working on Windows 2008
for DR mode?

I'm a bit late in the day getting around to testing this, but Microsoft
seem to have broken the loopback adapter method.
In Windows 2003 you just needed to diable the firewall to get it to work..
But with 2008 no joy yet.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Malcolm.

In the early days of linux, the LVS-DR realserver could have
the VIP on any device (my experiments on this are in the
HOWTO at

http://www.austintek.com/LVS/LVS-HOWTO/HOWTO/LVS-HOWTO.arp_problem.html#vip_devices
).

I've heard from people on the list, that you can't get some
of these configurations to work for 2.4 and 2.6 kernels.
Presumably the routing has changed.

Can you put two IPs on a NIC in windows? Can you put
a 2nd NIC into the windows box, and put the VIP on the 2nd
(otherwise unconnected) NIC? You might have to change the
netmask for the VIP for windows

http://www.austintek.com/LVS/LVS-HOWTO/HOWTO/LVS-HOWTO.ipvsadm.html#netmask_for_VIP

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the reply.

I'm pretty certain that you can get LVS-DR to work on all Linux kernels
for real servers (their are some issues with doing it on a director)
but just receiving the packets via loopback using either hidden (if
patched 2.4) or arpignore (2.6) or iptables REDIRECT (always works all
kernels)

Tried using a different interface but Windows disables the adapter if it
has no link (clever).
I will keep playing with settings.

how about plugging it in to the network too? I don't know if
windows has -noarp, but if not you could use routing tables
and host routes on a router in front of the LVS to handle
the arp problem.

Joseph et al.

Cracked it... finally,

To get LVS in Direct Routing mode to work with Windows 2008,
you can use the following commands to make the loopback work as excpected:
|netsh interface ipv4 set interface "net" weakhostrecieve=enabled
netsh interface ipv4 set interface "loopback" weakhostrecieve=enabled
netsh interface ipv4 set interface "loopback" weakhostsend=enabled|

I put the details in a blog entry here:
http://www.loadbalancer.org/blog/?p=6

thanks (yet another entry on getting the windows loopback to
work).
