Is Mythtv the best choice of viewer?

I've tried to understand Mythtv and have not had luck with it. Is this
the best choice of tv viewer or is there other good options?

MythTV is a lot more than a veiwer. What are you looking for? If all
you want is to view the mpeg stream from an ivtv card on your computer

mplayer /dev/video0

should do. If you want a tivo like box, MythTV is the best option.
There are several options in between but I am not very familiar with
them since I have used MythTV since 2004 and it works well with my 3
ivtv cards and my 1 digital card.

try mythdora or mythbuntu, either of which are very user friendly.

This is most likely off topic for this list, but what is it you want to do?

That will determine what software you want to use.

If I'm not mistaken, Mythbuntu is a full version of Ubuntu that just
happens to have Mythtv as its main feature. Is this true. Do you
recommend setting up a seperate partition with Mythbuntu or just install
Mythtvb on my current Ubuntu. I think a seperate setup woulfd be best,
don't you?

for you, all you need to do is type in a few items. see mythbuntu.org
for more info, and join the mythtv list.... google for mythtv mailing
list.

That does not narrow it down. I mean for this try:

mplayer /dev/video0

And tune with

ivtv-tune

Does that do what you want?

I use Freevo for my media center and I really like it. It is very flexible.
Hompage is here http://freevo.sourceforge.net/
