Umm...I'm 100% sure I have extracted the firmware
(ivtvfwextract.pl..etc). Is this what the above error is talking
about?

Ok, I haven't seen anyone else comment on this, so I plunged into it. So
far I've discovered (using the inf file on the install cd) that my card
uses the Conexant Falcon 2 chipset (which is some sort of variant of the
cx25840) I'm not postive, but I think it uses a different register set
than the 'normal' pvr150 cx25840, because these aren't correct:

> cx25840: Status: 'Not defined' (Detected audio standard)
> cx25840: Status: Video signal not present

While digging into the cx25840* files it appears that the register
values are more-or-less autogenerated, so I was wondering what I need to
do to come up with the correct register values and get those submitted
as a patch. I am willing to do testing and additional work to get this
card working, I just need some good directions to get started.

I've been looking at the cx25840 "b" driver and I think you are probably correct that there is a fundamental difference between the cards. I have been looking at the cx25840 "a" version because it partially works but I have not been able to determine how to modify the "b" version to make it work. I hope someone responds to your posting concerning the auto-generation of the registers for the other versions of the PVR 150.

With help of this list I've learned that the cx25840 reports 'Mono' and
'Not defined' when the card is'nt tuned to a channel...
When you are tuned to a channel dmesg will report 'Stereo' etc...

I want to help too to get a PVR-150 MCE PAL working optimally...

Looking at the README for the cx25840 driver, it notes that "I need to send the following 4 bytes to I2C address 0x43 0x00,0x16,0x70,0x4a" in order to get the tuner to work. With my NTSC PVR-500MCE I get the following in my dmesg output:

cx25840: *** I2C Write to no cx25840 device 0x43.

I'm assuming that the MCE (or maybe it's just the PVR-500) listen for this "magic" at a different address. Does anyone know how that "magic" was derived and how I can get the corresponding info for my card? Or, would it be potentially harmful to my card to go through all the possible addresses to send that data to?

Heh, I'm confused too, I had the tuner working great on mine before, but
now it doesn't, never had to do that to get it to work, but I'm not familiar
with Ulf's code at all really, too much to do other places to look into it
deeply right now, hopefully someone can, also I think it's using stuff he
hasn't released to autogenerate things so kinda stuck I suspose anyways wasting
time trying to figure it out.

After a lot of beating my head against brick walls, and nearly using the
cheapi2c connector (I had the soldering iron out and everything) I
finally got some tuning on my Diamond PVR550 (II?) It seems to have a
different input schema than the standard pvr150 (eg. the tuner is input
1 not input 6) Attached is a patch against 0.3.2a (I haven't tested it
on b yet, because others have mentioned that it doesn't work with NTSC
(my region.) I will get to that tonight or tomorrow.
In the patch I have created addendums to the pvr structs and created a
new struct for the pg600 inputs. There may be some extraneous data, but
I wanted to make sure I had my base covered.
Also, my card seems to employ the philips FQ1236/F tuner (as per the
label neatly hidden beneath the manufacterer's branding tag) and since
that particular tuner wasn't already in the tuner.h, it was included in
the patch as well. I snagged the def from some mailing list found on
google, so it very well may be wholly incorrect and if anyone knows of a
better definition, I would be much obliged to have it.

Hi Paul,

Which chips are on this card? That is the first step. If there is linux
support for the chips, then it should be possible to get it to work,
otherwise it might be very difficult or impossible.

It would be great if you could make detailed pictures of the card as
well.

This is helpful. The only part I am unsure about is the tuner. Do you know
if this tuner is NTSC-only, PAL-only or if it is a worldwide tuner?

I'll make an initial card definition for you to test with over the weekend.

Hi Paul,

I've made a first stab at it in my http://www.linuxtv.org/hg/~hverkuil/v4l-dvb-ivtv
tree.

It should at least autodetect the card and hopefully find all the i2c devices.
Please post the kernel messages you get when modprobing ivtv.

Also let me know which connectors there are: besides the tuner are there also
S-Video and/or Composite inputs? I need this info for the card definition.

Currently I assume you have a tuner, S-Video and Composite inputs.

For the tuner I am gambling that you have the common Philips tuner.

Since I do not know how the various chips are hooked up you may not actually
see any video. If that's the case, then you need to do a bunch of tests:

Edit linux/drivers/media/video/ivtv/ivtv-cards.c, search for the ivtv_card_gigapocket
struct and look at the .video_inputs field (line 1218):

The last entry (IVTV_SAA71XX_...) is my guess on how the video is hooked up.
For the tuner and composite inputs the possibilities are COMPOSITE0/1/2/3/4/5,
for the S-Video the possibilities are SVIDEO0/1/2/3. For S-Video you may end
up with B&W video. If so, then just make a note of it as it needs more fine
tuning in that case.

You just will have to go through all the possibilities until you find one that
works. It's usually best to start with the Composite input since there is no
tuner involved. If my guess for the tuner chip is wrong, then you may not
get any video for the tuner at all other than static.

After this the next step will be to get audio to work, but we'll tackle that
later. Just make a note if you get audio at all.
