PVR 350 (TV-Out) and PVR 150

I have scoured both the MythTv and ivtv lists and tried several different options. Unfortunately, none of them have worked. The PVR 350 is in PCI slot #1 and PVR 150 is slot #2.

The PVR 350 is working fine through the TV-Out (Svideo). I receive no apparent messages to indicated where I should go with this. When I use the following command, the file is 0 bytes.

# cat /dev/video1 > /tmp/file

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

** modprobe.conf **
alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 ivtv
alias char-major-81-1 ivtv
options saa7127 enable_output=1 i2c_enable=1,-1
options ivtv ivtv_debug=1 ivtv_std=1
options cx25840 i2c_enable=1 no_black_magic=1
install ivtv /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install ivtv; /sbin/modprobe ivtv-fb

Looks like the saa7127 module is claiming both cards, and preventing the
cx25840 module from setting up on the PVR150. Your module parameters
look right (i2c_enable=1,-1) though. Can you post a `dmesg | grep
saa7127`?

remove the black magic line and set the cx25840 i2c options to the
opposite of the saa7127

options cx25840 i2c_enable=-1,1

Actually since like version 0.3.6m, it is better not to set this
option at all (since the cx25840 can be actually probed properly, unlike
the saa7127). In fact, in the version he posted the log from 0.3.6w
will actually disable the cx25840 on the PVR150 (since it is before the
i2c_enable sanity patch in 0.3.7)

So long story short, don't put any module parameters on the cx25840.
But still post the dmesg | grep saa7127 please.

Re: PVR 350 (TV-Out) and PVR 150 [In reply to]

I changed the modprobe.conf to the following with the same results.

** modprobe.conf **
alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 ivtv
alias char-major-81-1 ivtv
options saa7127 enable_output=1 i2c_enable=1,-1

options cx25840 i2c_enable=-1,1
install ivtv /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install ivtv; /sbin/modprobe ivtv-fb

Lies! There can be only one! For some reason it isn't respecting
your i2c_enable module parameter. The second set should have a line
that says "saa7127 client id: saa7127_i2c_id 1, skipped". I'd suggest
getting up to version 0.3.7, which changes how the i2c_enable is handled
by the module.

I will upgrade. I'm currently using the "rpms" from the at-rpms site and there is appears there are no 3.7 versions available. Are these the steps to do this?

Remove all the following rpms (rpm -qa |grep ivtv)

ivtv-firmware-audio-0.0.1-1.at
ivtvdev-0.10-2.rhfc3.at
ivtv-kmdl-2.6.11-1.27_FC3-0.3.5l-92.rhfc3.at
ivtv-firmware-dec-2.02.023-4.at
ivtv-kmdl-2.6.11-1.35_FC3-0.3.6w-94.rhfc3.at
ivtv-firmware-enc-2.04.024-4.at
perl-Video-ivtv-0.13-7.rhfc3.at
ivtv-0.3.6w-94.rhfc3.at

Compile (configure, make, make install) the following or use existing RPM?

http://www.ivtv.tv/releases/ivtv-0.3/ivtv-0.3.7a.tgz

Do I need to do anything else? Is this all the software needed?

Thanks for your help.

Steve

Re: PVR 350 (TV-Out) and PVR 150 [In reply to]

Remove the ivtvdev, ivtv-kmdl, and ivtv rpms but not the
perl-Video-ivtv or ivtv-firmware-* rpms.

Then make and make install the source. Remember to depmod -a as well.

Re: PVR 350 (TV-Out) and PVR 150 [In reply to]

No change on the output. I tried several different scenarios.

1) Only aliases defined in modprobe.conf. - No Change
2) Removed no_black_magic - No change
3) Removed i2c_enable on both, on only one, then only the other - No Change

The following output is with this modprobe.conf file.

** /etc/modprobe.conf **
alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 ivtv
alias char-major-81-1 ivtv
options saa7127 i2c_enable=1,-1 output_select=1
options cx25840 i2c_enable=-1,1 no_black_magic=1
options ivtv ivtv_debug=1

Re: PVR 350 (TV-Out) and PVR 150 [In reply to]

I now have my PVR350 and PVR150 working fine with the ivtv 0.3.7a and Fedora Core3. Since everyone has been so helpful, I wanted to provide some feedback on how I resolved this.

PVR-350 Working with Fedora and ivtv 0.2.0-rc3j
Added a PVR 150 and assumed that I needed ivtv 0.3.x
(Still not sure if I needed to upgrade)
Upgraded to ivtv 0.3.6w using atrpms
For some reason, the option to disable saa7127 on the PVR 150 wasn’t working
options saa7127 i2c_enable=1,-1
Suggestion about upgrading to 0.3.7a since this handles the drivers differently
Removed some RPMs (ivtvdev, ivtv-kmdl, and ivtv rpms)
Compiled and installed 0.3.7a
For some reason, the same problem persisted with the options. I also noticed that the version from the /var/log/messages still showed 0.3.6w.
Since I had used “mkinitrd-ivtv /boot/initrd-`uname -r`.img `uname -r`” the old version was still in the RAM disk.
Tried rerunning the command but it failed looking for tveeprom-ivtv. I did not try the suggestion about removing the ivtv from the program.
I rebuilt the RAM disk with “mkinitrd -f /boot/initrd-`uname -r`.img `uname -r`”
Rebooted
PVR 150 and PVR 350 works

For detail see above.

** /etc/modprobe.conf ***

# ivtv modules setup

alias char-major-81 videodev

alias char-major-81-0 ivtv

alias char-major-81-1 ivtv

# Use following two lines for PVR350 Svideo-Out with frame buffer

options saa7127 i2c_enable=1,-1 output_select=1

install ivtv /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install ivtv; /sbin/modprobe ivtv-fb

Thanks to all. Now onto the next part of Myth.

Steve

Hi Steve,

with the tv out on your 350, are you running X out of it, and if so,
have you tried xvid or divx's out of it? i'm interested in the
performance .. ;-)

i've not been able to get decent performance (they look like they're
running in slow mo). admitadly the last time i tried was about 9
months ago, so things have probably changed a bit since then...

Re: PVR 350 (TV-Out) and PVR 150 [In reply to]

I am running X through the Svideo.

When I watched a DVD for the first time it was as you described choppy and slow. I then read about using Xine which helped a lot.

DVD Player: xine -f -I -V xshm --audio-driver alsa --no-logo --no-splash dvd://

I'm new and still trying to understand the environement. I would also like to try "xv" output through Svideo. If you know how, could you share some information.

I hope this answers your question.

Steve

Just replace 'xshm' with 'xv', like this:

xine -pfhq -V xv --no-splash dvd://
