GPG status msgs for Passphrase

Im trying to decrypt using --batch --status-fd=1 and reading from the
output, waiting for the NEED_PASSPHRASE msg. The problem is that this msg
never appears until the pipe is closed or the passphrase is provided. In
fact not even a single msgs is displayed until the passphrase is good or
fails.
It looks like the output hangs until the passphrase is provided, and so the
output is flushed. This is really unconvenient since the goal of this status
msgs is to be able to interact with GPG by reading its output msgs.
any ideas on this? someone else having the same issue? im running GPG's
portable version 1.4 on windows.
