Both CTRL+N and right-click on a link then open in new window work instantaneously. I'm on mozilla-firefox-0.9.3-r1. Have you tried this upgrade? I had a problem with editing bookmarks, and that was cured by the upgrade to 0.9.3-r1. I also had a problem with the 0.9.3 binary from mozilla (quite unstable, but I can't remember the specifics) that was cured by compiling 0.9.3 from source.
