3D-acceleration not working on old iMac

Hello,

after getting my "@" working again, I want my Xorg to use direct
rendering with my "ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage Pro 215GP (rev 5c)"
graphics card.

So I followed this howto:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml#drm

But:
jan [at] ima ~ $ glxinfo | grep "direct rendering"
direct rendering: No

And those are the relevant parts of my xorg.conf:
Section "Module"
Load "extmod"
Load "fbdevhw"
Load "dri"
Load "dbe"
Load "record"
Load "xtrap"
Load "glx"
Load "type1"
Load "freetype"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Driver "ati"
Identifier "r128"
Videoram 8192
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "r128"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 16
Subsection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
EndSection

Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection

And this says my Xorg.0.log:
But I can't see why I don't get direct rendering.

You have a Mach64, not a Rage128. It's possible to use drm with that
card, but it's a real pain. The patches for it should be merged into
Modular X, you should probably look into upgrading to modular:

Really? I mean: sure?
I'm puzzled because this is what lspci tells me:

imac ~ # lspci | grep "VGA"
00:12.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage Pro
215GP (rev 5c)

I read that I could use the useflag "insecure-drivers" on a german
howto, if anybody can read it: Chapter 3.2
http://www.gentoo.de/doc/de/dri-howto.xml#doc_chap3

Because I don't like using ~* I'd like to know if there is a difference
in Mach64-support on Xorg 6.8.2 and 7.0.
And... you know, it takes a while to compile Xorg on this old iMac, so I
don't like to more experiments than necessary. ;)

Thanks so far

Hi,

I made some progress.

Jan Girlich wrote:

This was the right pointer!

So I started to search for manuals etc. dealing with mach64 and DRM.

What I did, step by step:

1. Remove kernel-DRM or use it as module,
get latest DRM from CVS,
compile DRM and restart (reload kernel) [1]

2. Set useflag insecure-drivers for Xorg and recompile Xorg [2]

3. Use not more than 16 bpp for color depth [3] & add the line
Option "DMAMode" "async"
to /etc/X11/xorg.conf [4]

[1] Chapter 1.1.2. & 1.9. on http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/Building
[2] http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/dri-howto.xml#doc_chap3
[3] http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-416937.html
[4]
http://www.mail-archive.com/dri-devel [at] lists/msg15920.html

Now glxgears reports: "direct rendering: Yes" and Xorg.0.log looks fine.
But when I start glxgears a black window opens and Xorg freezes hard. I
can log into the machine with ssh, kill and restart Xorg and take a look
in the logfiles. But I can't find any useful informations in the logfiles.
