Gentoo Weekly Newsletter 30 April 2007

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Gentoo Weekly Newsletter http://www.gentoo.org/news/en/gwn/20070430-newsletter.xml This is the Gentoo Weekly Newsletter for the week of 30 April 2007. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ============== 1. Gentoo News ============== Ant 1.7.0 going stable ---------------------- After months of development and testing, Ant 1.7.0 is going to be stabilized, starting this weekend. With this version comes a substantial change in the way Ant is packaged and used in Gentoo. All optional Ant tasks are now separate packages. This will allow improvements in packaging of other Java packages, for which Ant is the most commonly used build system. Users who don't use Ant themselves almost don't need to be aware of this change. Only during the upgrade, previous versions of dev-java/ant-tasks and dev-java/ant need to be manually removed first, to allow installation of dev-java/ant-core-1.7.0. More information for Ant users, ebuild writers and the whole new setup are available in the new Ant Guide[1]. 1. http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/java/ant-guide.xml Apache 1.x removal from the tree -------------------------------- Apache 2.x is a stable and reliable successor of Apache 1.x and boasts additional features plus an improved active maintenance cycle. As such, support for Apache 1.x in Gentoo will be dropped starting 12 May 2007. All Apache 1.x ebuilds as well as Apache 1.x-only modules will be added to package.mask for the usual time of one month, and then removed from the tree permanently. Italian translation team seeking help ------------------------------------- It is time for the Italian translation team to start recruiting more translators. Documentation is essential to using Gentoo, because it is useful for the users that do not have Gentoo experience or don't know English. If you know written English and you use Gentoo you can help the Italian Translation team in translating some documents. If you're interested send a mail to Marco Mascherpa[2] or Davide Cendron[3]. 2. m.mascherpa [at] gentoo 3. scan [at] gentoo ========================= 2. Heard in the community ========================= planet.gentoo.org ----------------- Gentoo/FreeBSD 7.0_pre ebuilds It has recently been announced by Timothy Redaelli[4] that he finished creating ebuilds for Gentoo/FreeBSD 7.0_pre200704 based on snapshot CURRENT 200704-ZFS. His ebuilds can be found on drizzt-overlay[5]. To update, you must change your profile and your CHOST following the CHOST Guide[6]. You must use binutils, gcc, and freebsd-libc instead of glibc. At the moment, locales do not work and the sparc-fbsd KEYWORD has been dropped. Drizzt also needs to update rtld-elf to 7.0. 4. drizzt [at] gentoo 5. http://overlays.gentoo.org/dev/drizzt 6. http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/change-chost.xml ====================== 3. Gentoo in the press ====================== Wired.com (25 April, 2007) -------------------------- In a design gallery on their website entitled "Lamest Technology Mascots Ever," the technology publication Wired poked fun at mascots ranging from Tux the Penguin to Duke the Java mascot, and our very own Larry the Cow was given his place in the gallery. Despite the title of the article, Wired seemingly looked favorably on Larry, writing "Larry the Cow, the inscrutable spokesbeing for the Gentoo distribution of Linux, is both striking and minimalist," before quipping "Isn't Larry a guy's name?". Visitors to the Wired site may vote on Larry's fate in their gallery, and users have been weighing in on a forum thread[7], complete with an alternative Larry/Tux hybrid. 7. http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-555487.html * http://www.wired.com/culture/design/multimedia/2007/04/gallery_mascots Wired.com (26 April, 2007) -------------------------- According to the article, "Mac OS X users have yet another virtualization option now that Innotek has announced a Mac version of its VirtualBox software. VirtualBox was previously available to Windows and Linux users and supports a variety of x86 compatible guest operating systems, including Windows Vista and Gentoo Linux." While Gentoo Linux is the only listed Linux in the article, the VirtualBox web site doesn't list Gentoo (or anything, for that matter). * http://blog.wired.com/monkeybites/2007/04/virtualbox_adds.html ========================= 4. Gentoo security ================== Blender: User-assisted remote execution of arbitrary code --------------------------------------------------------- A vulnerability has been discovered in Blender allowing for user-assisted arbitrary code execution. For more information, please see the GLSA Announcement[8] 8. http://www.gentoo.org/security/en/glsa/glsa-200704-19.xml NAS: Multiple vulnerabilities ----------------------------- The Network Audio System is vulnerable to a buffer overflow that could result in the execution of arbitrary code with root privileges. Gentoo package moves ======================= This section lists packages that have either been moved or added to the tree and packages that have had their "last rites" announcement given to be removed in the future. The package removals come from many locations, including the Treecleaners[13] and various developers. Most packages which are listed under the Last Rites section are in need of some love and care and can remain in the tree if proper maintainership is established. 13.
