~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Gentoo Weekly Newsletter http://www.gentoo.org/news/en/gwn/20070416-newsletter.xml This is the Gentoo Weekly Newsletter for the week of 16 April 2007. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ============== 1. Gentoo News ============== GWN seeking more writers ------------------------ It is once again time for the GWN to start recruiting more writers. As you may have noticed, the GWN has been rather thin the last few weeks and it has had a hard time getting published on time. In an attempt to try to alleviate the problems with the GWN, the staff is seeking more writers from the community to help write for the GWN. To become a GWN writer, you only need to be able to write in English and pay attention on an email alias to assist in creating a cooperative environment between the GWN developer staff and the volunteer writers. If you're interested in joining the GWN, or even just occasionally writing an article or two, please contact the GWN staff at gwn-feedback [at] gentoo April Council meeting held -------------------------- On April 12th, the Gentoo Council held their monthly meeting. The agenda was as follows: * Code of Conduct * Syncing Social Contract with Gentoo Foundation (external entities) * Documentation for mail servers * PMS (Package Manager Specification) * Splitting gentoo-dev mailing lists * Limiting of Council powers * Moving gentoo-core mailing list to public archives * Surveys * New metastructure proposal A summary of the meeting[1] was posted by Mike Frysinger[2] on the gentoo-dev mailing list, and the full logs[1] can be found linked on the Council project page. 1. http://archives.gentoo.org/gentoo-dev/msg_144550.xml 2. vapier [at] gentoo Gentoo Linux first distribution to run on Apple TV -------------------------------------------------- Gentoo developer Edgar Hucek[3], also from the mactel-linux[4] project, was the first person who managed to boot Linux on an Intel-based AppleTV. In the installation guides which emerged soon after, Gentoo is used as the distribution of choice. Our distribution was chosen due to the fact that it is one of the more portable Linux distributions and, as such, is often one of the first to be ported to new devices (for example, Gentoo was the first Linux distribution to work on the Intel-based Macs). 3. gimli [at] gentoo 4. http://www.mactel-linux.org/wiki/Main_Page The kernel is booted from a custom loader, which is loaded by boot.efi - AppleTV's bootloader. At the time of writing, USB, Xorg's NV nVidia drivers, nVidia's propritary drivers, speedstep, wifi and sound all work from within Linux. * http://www.mactel-linux.org/wiki/AppleTV * http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/Linux_on_Apple_TV ========================= 2. Heard in the community ========================= planet.gentoo.org ----------------- baselayout-2 nears completion It has recently been announced on Planet Gentoo by Roy Marples[5] that baselayout-2 has neared completion. The current versions of baselayout are written in bash, which, although powerful, is relatively slow. UberLord has been converting RC from bash to C, which has resulted in a tremendous speed increase (init completion in a mere 2 seconds). The conversion from bash to C also removes the requirement of bash, which is a boon for embedded devices. 5. uberlord [at] gentoo * http://roy.marples.name/node/299 ========================= 3. Gentoo developer moves ========================= Moves ----- The following developers recently left the Gentoo project: * Matthieu Sozeau (mattam) * Jakub Moc (jakub) Adds ---- The following developers recently joined the Gentoo project: * Wulf C. Krueger (Philantrop) KDE team * Thomas Scharl (think4urs11) Forums team * Tobias Heinlein (keytoaster) German Documentation team * Ulrich Müller (ulm) Emacs team * Davide Cendron (scen) Italian Documentation team * Alec Warner (antarus) Treecleaners/Portage teams Changes ------- The following developers recently changed roles within the Gentoo project: * none this week ================== 4. Gentoo security ================== DokuWiki: Cross-site scripting vulnerability -------------------------------------------- DokuWiki is vulnerable to a cross-site scripting attack. For more information, please see the GLSA Announcement[6] 6. http://www.gentoo.org/security/en/glsa/glsa-200704-08.xml ======================= 5. Gentoo package moves ======================= This section lists packages that have either been moved or added to the tree and packages that have had their "last rites" announcement given to be removed in the future. The package removals come from many locations, including the Treecleaners[7] and various developers. Most packages which are listed under the Last Rites section are in need of some love and care and can remain in the tree if proper maintainership is established. 7. http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/qa/treecleaners Removals: --------- Package: Removal date: Contact: dev-python/snmpy 09 Apr 2007 Tiziano Müller[8] net-misc/e100 09 Apr 2007 Raúl Porcel[9] www-misc/pglogd 11 Apr 2007 Luca Longinotti[10] sys-fs/ext2resize 12 Apr 2007 Mike Frysinger[2] www-apps/open-xchange 12 Apr 2007 Petteri Räty[11] x11-misc/root-portal 13 Apr 2007 Stefan Schweizer[12] app-admin/gnomesu 13 Apr 2007 Stefan Schweizer[12] app-admin/xsu2 13 Apr 2007 Stefan Schweizer[12] x11-libs/libzvt 13 Apr 2007 Stefan Schweizer[12] dev-java/oscore-bin 14 Apr 2007 William Thomson[13] dev-java/oscore 14 Apr 2007 William Thomson[13] net-misc/asterisk-oh323 14 Apr 2007 Stefan Schweizer[12] net-misc/gnugk 14 Apr 2007 Stefan Schweizer[12] net-misc/linphone 14 Apr 2007 Stefan Schweizer[12] net-im/wengophone 14 Apr 2007 Stefan Schweizer[12] dev-perl/XML-LibXML-XPathContext 14 Apr 2007 Michael Cummings[14] games-arcade/triplexinvaders 14 Apr 2007 Michael Sterrett[15] xfce-extra/xfcalendar 14 Apr 2007 Samuli Suominen[16] xfce-extra/xfce4-iconbox 14 Apr 2007 Samuli Suominen[16] xfce-extra/xfce4-minicmd 14 Apr 2007 Samuli Suominen[16] xfce-extra/xfce4-showdesktop 14 Apr 2007 Samuli Suominen[16] xfce-extra/xfce4-systray 14 Apr 2007 Samuli Suominen[16] xfce-extra/xfce4-taskbar 14 Apr 2007 Samuli Suominen[16] xfce-extra/xfce4-toys 14 Apr 2007 Samuli Suominen[16] xfce-extra/xfce4-trigger-launcher 14 Apr 2007 Samuli Suominen[16] xfce-extra/xfce4-windowlist 14 Apr 2007 Samuli Suominen[16] xfce-base/xffm 14 Apr 2007 Samuli Suominen[16] kde-base/unsermake 15 Apr 2007 Stefan Schweizer[12] sys-fs/captive 15 Apr 2007 Stefan Schweizer[12] 2. vapier [at] gentoo 8. dev-zero [at] gentoo 9. armin76 [at] gentoo 10. chtekk [at] gentoo 11. betelgeuse [at] gentoo 12. genstef [at] gentoo 13. wltjr [at] gentoo 14. mcummings [at] gentoo 15. mr_bones_ [at] gentoo 16. drac [at] gentoo Additions: ---------- Package: Addition date: Contact: dev-libs/uriparser[17] 09 Apr 2007 Robert Buchholz[18] dev-libs/libvolume_id[19] 09 Apr 2007 Roy Marples[5] media-video/shrip[20] 11 Apr 2007 Steve Dibb[21] dev-java/ical4j[22] 11 Apr 2007 Petteri Räty[11] net-firewall/shorewall-perl[23] 12 Apr 2007 Markus Ullmann[24] media-libs/ufo[25] 12 Apr 2007 Markus Ullmann[24] media-sound/herrie[26] 13 Apr 2007 Robert Buchholz[18] sys-fs/mp3fs[27] 13 Apr 2007 Daniel Black[28] games-fps/ut2004-da2[29] 13 Apr 2007 Chris Gianelloni[30] dev-ruby/parsetree[31] 13 Apr 2007 Robin H.
