~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Gentoo Weekly Newsletter http://www.gentoo.org/news/en/gwn/20070312-newsletter.xml This is the Gentoo Weekly Newsletter for the week of 12 March 2007. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ============== 1. Gentoo News ============== Gentoo/FreeBSD 6.2 stage tarballs released ------------------------------------------ The Gentoo/FreeBSD[1] team would like to announce that new tarballs based on FreeBSD 6.2 can now be found on the mirrors in the /experimental/x86/freebsd/stages directory. Note that Gentoo/FreeBSD is still in its infancy and is not a security supported platform. Those that do wish to install should follow the Gentoo/FreeBSD guide[2]. If you have any questions about Gentoo/FreeBSD, the developers can be found in the #gentoo-bsd channel on the Freenode IRC network. 1. http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/gentoo-alt/bsd/fbsd/ 2. http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-freebsd.xml New Playstation 3 stage tarballs released ----------------------------------------- Another experimental release, this time for the Sony Playstation 3 platform, has been announced, with the stages including some optimizations making use of the Altivec instruction set. The new tarballs can be found in the /experimental/ppc64/stages directory on the mirrors, and users should read the Gentoo on a PS3 guide[3] for installation instructions. People that want to help test Gentoo on the PS3 should contact the PPC64 team in their IRC channel, #gentoo-ppc64. 3. http://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/cell/wiki/InstallGentooOnPS3 Gentoo Documentation Project is looking for translators ------------------------------------------------------- What is the GDP? The Gentoo Documentation Project[4] (GDP) is responsible for the creation and maintenance of all official documentation. The GDP is not a closed team of any sorts, but is instead an open community committed to critiquing, and possibly integrating, viable user documentation. 4. http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/gdp/ The GDP maintains an internationalisation sub-project[5] that takes care of translating most of the English documentation. You can read the current status of a few teams below. 5. http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/gdp/international.xml Polish The Polish translation team is led by Łukasz Damentko[6] and Damian Kuras[7]. All the info is on their project page[8]. They meet at #gentoo-docs-pl and #gentoo.pl on irc.freenode.org. They're looking for people to aid their updating efforts. 6. rane [at] gentoo 7. shadoww [at] gentoo 8. http://dev.gentoo.org/~rane/ Dutch The Dutch translations team is lead by Dimitry Bradt[9] and is currently still looking for a potential co-lead Dutch developer. On their project page[10] you can find links to their list of list of outdated documents[11] and their TODO list[12]. The Dutch team is really looking for motivated translators for documentation and the GWN. You contact them by mail[13] or irc[14] at #gentoo-doc-nl on freenode. 9. diox [at] gentoo 10. http://dev.gentoo.org/~diox/gentoo-doc-nl/ 11. http://dev.gentoo.org/~diox/ 12. http://todo.belandi.be 13. gentoo-doc-nl [at] gentoo 14. irc://irc.freenode.org/gentoo-doc-nl French French translations are led by Camille Huot[15] and are actively looking for a co-lead. New recruits just arrived to help the team but they're still accepting volunteers. If you're interested in helping, just visit the French GDP home page[16] to know about the gory details, then you can send them an email[17] or join them on #gentoo-doc-fr on irc.freenode.net. Their IRC channel also hosts GWN and Gentoo applications (like GLI) translators. 15. cam [at] gentoo 16. http://dev.gentoo.org/~cam/gentoo-doc-fr/ 17. gentoo-doc-fr [at] gentoo Spanish The Spanish translation team is led by John Christian Stoddart[18] and José Luis Rivero[19]. The overall state of the project can be ascertained here[20]. The team is especially interested in help translating the valuable Gentoo article library. Please contact the Spanish translation team directly via email or in the Gentoo IRC channel #gentoo-es on irc.freenode.net or via the mailing list[21]. 18. chiguire [at] gentoo 19. yoswink [at] gentoo 20. http://www.gentoo.org/doc/es/overview.xml 21. gentoo-doc-es [at] gentoo German The German translations are led by Jan Hendrik Grahl[22] with the position of co-lead currently open. The status of the translations is documented via the trads script[23]. There is also an article detailing how to participate in the translation project[24]. Feel free to contact us directly, over the mailing list[25], or via IRC on #gentoo-doc-de. 22. grahl [at] gentoo 23. http://dev.gentoo.org/~grahl/trads-de.xml 24. http://www.gentoo.de/proj/de/gtt/information.xml 25. gentoo-doc-de [at] gentoo Italian The Italian translations are led by Marco Mascherpa[26]. They are currently looking for a co-lead, but they seem to be doing just fine at the moment. Follow the following links to see their progress[27] and guide lines[28]. You can find them on irc at #gentoo-it on irc.freenode.org. 26. mascherpa [at] gentoo 27. http://dev.gentoo.org/~mascherpa/trads-it.xml 28. http://dev.gentoo.org/~mascherpa/guidelines.html Brazilian Portuguese The Brazilian Portuguese translations are lead by Marcelo Goes[29] with the position of co-lead currently open. A short guide[30] can help potential translators learn the tools of the trade. The Brazilian Portuguese team is in urgent need of help to keep its translations updated. If you think you can help, please contact Marcelo. 29. vanquirius [at] gentoo 30. http://dev.gentoo.org/~vanquirius/traduzindo.html Finnish The Finnish translations are lead by Flammie Pirinen[31]. The Finnish team is in urgent need of help to keep its translations up to date. If you are interested in helping out, read Flammie's developer space[32] for more information on how to contribute. 31. flammie [at] gentoo 32. http://dev.gentoo.org/~flammie/ Other Other teams can be contacted by emailing their respective translators listed on our internationalisation sub-project page[5]. If your language is not listed, please contact the Gentoo Documentation Project[4] (GDP). 4. http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/gdp/ 5. http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/gdp/international.xml ========================= 2. Heard in the community ========================= gentoo-dev ---------- Introducing D into the tree Gentoo developer Anant Narayanan[33] wrote to the gentoo-dev mailing list to announce that he is currently working on creating ebuilds relating to the D programming language to add into the portage tree. 33. anant [at] gentoo * http://archives.gentoo.org/gentoo-dev/msg_143318.xml * forum thread about D[34] 34. http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-73419.html ======================= 3. Gentoo International ======================= France, 24H of Computer Science, Maubeuge ----------------------------------------- This 2 and 3 of June, a French event will take place in Maubeuge, in northern France. The event will be subdivided in three sub-events. The first sub-event, a Free and Open Source Exposition, will consist of conferences, stands and discussions with the different organizations that will be present. From the tiniest project to worldwide organizations like Gentoo, the goal is to try to show France that Free Software is the easiest way to look to the future. Also, preparations will be made for the French Free Software Meeting ("Rencontres Mondiales du Logiciel Libre"), coming up in July. Some developer meetings will also takes place, and visitors will be able to put a face on the nicknames seen on IRC and mailing lists. Second, there will be a challenge from Saturday 10AM to Sunday 10AM. With about fifteen universities bringing students to battle on three different subjects: general programming, web site development, and security. Finally, there will be a computer fair, where professionals and non-professionals will sell computer parts, games, and retro steampunk. Come on over, buy your new system, get an InstallCD at our booth, and start installing. ;-) Everybody is welcome to attend the event, which is open to the public. Since Maubeuge is located near the Belgian border, you'll find fries, beer, fries and... beer! There will be quite a few Gentoo developers around, so you can ask them questions in person. * website: http://24h.acissi.net * contact: koreth [at] acissi ========================= 4. Gentoo package moves ======================= This section lists packages that have either been moved or added to the tree and packages that have had their "last rites" announcement given to be removed in the future. The package removals come from many locations, including the Treecleaners[39] and various developers. Most packages which are listed under the Last Rites section are in need of some love and care and can remain in the tree if proper maintainership is established. 39.
