Gentoo Weekly Newsletter 12 February 2007

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Gentoo Weekly Newsletter http://www.gentoo.org/news/en/gwn/20070212-newsletter.xml This is the Gentoo Weekly Newsletter for the week of 12 February 2007. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ============== 1. Gentoo News ============== Time Zone update coming ----------------------- The United States passed a bill to extend Daylight Savings Time. Due to this change, some users need to ensure they have the new time zone information to keep their computer's clocks accurate. For our users in the United States, please make sure you have updated to at least version 2006p of sys-libs/timezone-data on or before 11 March. Testing for media-libs/freetype-2.3.1 ------------------------------------- On Thursday, 8 February, versions 2.2.1 and 2.3.1 of the FreeType library were unmasked in the tree for ~arch (testing) users. These versions were masked for about eight months to make for an easier transition. Some older software relied on the presence of some internal headers, functions, and variables that are no longer exported to external programs in these two versions. Although most of the packages in the tree should be now corrected, with the main problems being older Qt and KDE versions that are no longer in the tree, more testing is certainly helpful and appreciated. Please file bugs if you find any software in either the stable or testing branches of the tree that does not compile against these newer versions of FreeType and assign the bug to Diego Pettenò[1]. 1. flameeyes [at] gentoo Problems with NSS/NSPR ---------------------- Some users have noticed troubles in some applications, such as www-client/mozilla-firefox or mail-client/mozilla-thunderbird when accessing encrypted resources, such as SSL-enabled pages. This is caused by an upgrade problem affecting users of the testing branch, where dev-libs/nspr was upgraded, then an application such as www-client/mozilla-firefox was upgraded, without prior updating dev-libs/nss. This can be solved rather easily, by emerging the packages in the correct order. +---------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Code Listing 1.1 | | Fixing NSS/NSPR with Mozilla Firefox | +---------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | # emerge --oneshot dev-libs/nspr dev-libs/nss www-client/mozilla-firefox | +---------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Thanks from the KDE team ------------------------ Thanks to all of the people who offered their help to the KDE team. There have been lots of responses, which the team has tried to follow up. If anyone else wants to help out it is not too late! Please take a look at http://dev.gentoo.org/~masterdriverz/kde-help.txt and drop into #gentoo-kde on irc.freenode.net some time. Adopt-a-Dev update ------------------ After some time of inactivity after the previous lead project lead retired from Gentoo, the Adopt-a-dev[2] Project is back in operation under its new leader, Dimitry Bradt[3]. Dimitry has contacted everyone who had emailed the project during the inactivity and would like to thank all previous donors for their trust and contribution to this project. 2. http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/userrel/adopt-a-dev/ 3. diox [at] gentoo If you have something in your attic or closet that you want to get rid of and you think that Gentoo developers could use it, or you wish to fill one of the requests put up by developers, visit the project page[2] and/or mail adopt-a-dev [at] gentoo 2. http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/userrel/adopt-a-dev/ ======================= 2. Gentoo International ======================= Denmark: Linuxforum 2007, Copenhagen ------------------------------------ The biggest Scandinavian open source conference, LinuxForum, will be celebrating its tenth year. LinuxForum covers various topics about UNIX, BSD, Open Source, and Linux. This year, Gentoo will have a booth at the conference which will be manned by various developer from Denmark, as well as a small group of developers from abroad. The event takes place on March 2 and March 3, with Gentoo being present on the 3rd. Please stop by the booth with your questions, as Gentoo will have representatives from the security team and the Release Coordinators for Alpha, IA64, and MIPS among the group, along with the User Relations project lead. For more information, see http://www.linuxforum.dk/. ========================= 3. Gentoo developer moves ========================= Moves ----- The following developers recently left the Gentoo project: * none this week Adds ---- The following developers recently joined the Gentoo project: * none this week Changes ------- The following developers recently changed roles within the Gentoo project: * none this week ================== 4. Gentoo Security ================== Gentoo Security is on hiatus this week due to no GLSA being released. ======================= 5. Gentoo package moves ======================= This section lists packages that have either been moved or added to the tree and packages that have had their "last rites" announcement given to be removed in the future. The package removals come from many locations, including the Treecleaners[4] and various developers. Most packages which are listed under the Last Rites section are in need of some love and care and can remain in the tree if proper maintainership is established. 4. http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/qa/treecleaners Removals: --------- Package: Removal date: Contact: app-emacs/gnuplot-mode 05 Feb 2007 Christian Faulhammer[5] dev-ada/adabroker 05 Feb 2007 George Shapovalov[6] dev-games/cel-cvs 06 Feb 2007 Chris Gianelloni[7] dev-games/crystalspace-cvs 06 Feb 2007 Chris Gianelloni[7] app-i18n/jmode 06 Feb 2007 Diego Pettenò[1] dev-lisp/cl-arnesi 08 Feb 2007 Christian Faulhammer[5] dev-lisp/cl-yaclml 08 Feb 2007 Christian Faulhammer[5] dev-lisp/cl-icu 08 Feb 2007 Christian Faulhammer[5] dev-lisp/cl-fiveam 08 Feb 2007 Christian Faulhammer[5] dev-lisp/cl-ucw 08 Feb 2007 Christian Faulhammer[5] dev-lisp/cl-rfc2109 08 Feb 2007 Christian Faulhammer[5] sys-fs/submount 08 Feb 2007 Daniel Drake[8] games-server/gta3mta 08 Feb 2007 Chris Gianelloni[7] games-strategy/freecraft-fcmp 09 Feb 2007 Chris Gianelloni[7] app-portage/abeni 09 Feb 2007 Paul Varner[9] x11-misc/gpasman 09 Feb 2007 Krzysiek Pawlik[10] media-libs/openquicktime 10 Feb 2007 Diego Pettenò[1] net-p2p/ww 10 Feb 2007 Raúl Porcel[11] net-p2p/azureus-bin 10 Feb 2007 Petteri Räty[12] app-laptop/macosd 11 Feb 2007 Markus Rothe[13] 1. flameeyes [at] gentoo 5. opfer [at] gentoo 6. george [at] gentoo 7. wolf31o2 [at] gentoo 8. dsd [at] gentoo 9. fuzzyray [at] gentoo 10. nelchael [at] gentoo 11. armin76 [at] gentoo 12. betelgeuse [at] gentoo 13. corsair [at] gentoo Additions: ---------- Package: Addition date: Contact: dev-ada/glade[14] 05 Feb 2007 George Shapovalov[6] media-libs/libafterimage[15] 05 Feb 2007 Sebastien Fabbro[16] dev-perl/Return-Value[17] 05 Feb 2007 Michael Cummings[18] dev-perl/Email-Send[19] 05 Feb 2007 Michael Cummings[18] dev-perl/Email-MIME-Encodings[20] 05 Feb 2007 Michael Cummings[18] dev-perl/Email-MessageID[21] 05 Feb 2007 Michael Cummings[18] dev-perl/Email-MIME-ContentType[22] 05 Feb 2007 Michael Cummings[18] dev-perl/Email-MIME[23] 05 Feb 2007 Michael Cummings[18] dev-perl/Email-MIME-Modifier[24] 05 Feb 2007 Michael Cummings[18] dev-perl/Email-MIME-Attachment-Stripper[25] 05 Feb 2007 Michael Cummings[18] dev-perl/Email-Date[26] 05 Feb 2007 Michael Cummings[18] dev-perl/Email-Simple-Creator[27] 05 Feb 2007 Michael Cummings[18] dev-perl/Email-MIME-Creator[28] 05 Feb 2007 Michael Cummings[18] dev-perl/Email-Reply[29] 05 Feb 2007 Michael Cummings[18] sys-block/fwdl[30] 06 Feb 2007 Robin H.
