Forrest 0.6 Interaction with Tomcat 5.0.27

Forrest 0.6 Interaction with Tomcat 5.0.27

Hi,

I'm seeing odd behavior when I try to use the forrest from svn.

I compile on Windows XP, I have Apache 2.0.50 + Tomcat 5.0.27 + JK2 2.0.4
I stopped using Cygwin because it was introducing it's own set of issues.

I keep my local image updated using: 'svn update', then 'build clean' the
'build'

I can seed, build and deploy a webapp.. no problems so far.

I connect Tomcat to the Forrest site with this configuration file:

<Context path="/ForrestExamples" docBase="C:\Forrest\build\webapp" debug="0"

<Logger className="org.apache.catalina.logger.FileLogger" debug="0"
verbosity="1" prefix="forrest_demo_log." directory="logs" timestamp="true"
suffix=".txt"/>
</Context>

I have copied over the endorsed libraries in to Tomcat's endorsed directory.

I can even access the Forrest Site from Tomcat.

The problem is once I put the configuration file into Tomcat's
catalina/localhost directory, I can no longer access several other of my
other applications such as Xindice, or the JSP and Servlet examples that
ship with Tomcat. I can't even access the Tomcat Home Page using
http://myurl.com:8080

I get HTTP Status 503 (Application Not Currently Available) for each of
these

Oddly enough, I can still access Cocoon 2.1.5.1 samples, Axis sample page
and the eXist XMLDB sample page.

Here's a few lines from my stdout.log file that are not there when all is
working.:

If I remove the Forrest site configuration file, and restart Tomcat, then
all is fine, except I can't access the Forrest Site without the config file.
If I copy the config file back to Tomcat, go to the Tomcat admin panel and
'start' Forrest, everything is fine. I can access my Forrest site and the
Tomcat home page.
If I stop then start Tomcat, it breaks again.

This is very localized to the 0.6 Forrest install.

If I swap back to using forrest 0.5.1 (%FORREST_HOME%, 0.5.1 endorsed libs,
etc..), then I don't have any problems at all.

Any one have any experience with any of this?

I do not run Tomcat so cannot help much. However, we need to keep
your issue near the top of the pile.

When you say "put the configuration file" are you adding the above
fragment to an existing configuration file, or are you totally
replacing a configuration file, or what? Our instructions from
the 'forrest webapp' or 'forrest war' say to add that to server.xml
Are our instructions out-of-date?

Thanks for bumping me up to the top again.

JK2 is the connector between Apache 2.0.50 and Tomcat 5.0.27. It allows be
to access Tomcat applications without specifying the port (:8080) in the
url. (rather than http://myurl.com:8080/Cocoon I can use
http://myurl.com/Cocoon and let Apache send the requests to TomCat using the
JK2 connector)

I mainly added Apache and JK2 to my list for completeness. It isn't
necessary, and I observe the same behavior if I shutdown Apache and run
Tomcat standalone, using port :8080.

I am using svn: rev: 36029 (your latest recommended baseline) for forrest
0.6

About the configuration file.

Starting with TC5, you created individual configuraiton files for
applications in %CATALINA_HOME%/conf/catalina/localhost

This is where admin.xml, manager.xml and balancer.xml live.

I have several of my configuration files in there as well: xindice.xml,
axis.xml, forrest.xml (for forrest0.5.1) and forrestexample.xml (for forrest
0.6).

Editing server.xml was how TC4 accomplished the same thing. The difference
is with TC5 I don't edit (and possible break) distributed files and updating
doesn't over-write my modifications. But it is the same concept: to inform
Tomcat where to find the web application.

UPDATE:

I noticed two new version of Tomcat are available.
I installed 5.0.28, I am using Sun JDK: 1.4.2_05, I copied the endorsed libs
from forrest to Tomcat.

I got the latest from svn (build 37388) and it built fine.

I seeded a new Forrest 0.6 site, but when I go to generate the site, I get 1
error and the build fails.

I decided to try to build the webapp for Tomcat anyway and I get this error:

I assume the first issue either not a problem or my configuration. If this
is a problem, then it would seem to be a show stopper.
If it's my configuration, then can someone help?

I am running XP, sun jdk 1.4.2_05. I _not_ using Cygwin, I am using the
Command Prompt to do all builds.
I have installed Tomcat 5.0.28 (which, btw, runs forrest 0.5.1 without a
problem)
My environment: FORREST_HOME=C:\Programs\ApacheGroup\forrest-0.6\src\core
Which is where I build from svn.

Next, I will try installing Tomcat 5.5, but since these errors are long
before we get to Tomcat, I doubt the version of Tomcat makes a difference.

We know about that single failure, but don't yet
know what causes it. As the message says, the rest
of the generation is successful.

This is strange. Is it Issue FOR-255?

If so, then comment-out the document type declaration on
your skinconf.xml

Either overlook it, or help to fix it.

and forrest complained immediatly that skinconf.xml was not an valid XML

We know about that single failure, but don't yet

This is strange. Is it Issue FOR-255?

Sorry, my comment was hasty. Change the systemIdentifier to
use a minimal systemIdentifier.

Comment out the document type declaration completely
and add the line "forrest.validate.skinconf=false"
to forrest.properties.

Is there a reason why one would have to 'add' the above line, rather
than uncomment it (i.e., place all of these options in the file--a la
Apache's httpd.conf)? I would think the file would have *all* of the
possible entries in it, but mostly be commented out (along with a
description of what each does). I suspect that this would lessen the
number of questions that pop up on the mailing list.

Thanks Clay, you are right. When i had to do that, i wondered
why the default properties were not shown. I will fix that.

I see (elsewhere) that you have successfully built a war file ('forrest war'), but in a *nix system, not Windows.

For better or for worse, though, we have come full circle with the issue.

Rather than continue to deal with, what I thought might be a Tomcat conf file issue, I removed the conf file for forrest 0.6 and, instead, put the war file in Tomcat/webapps directory and let Tomcat unravel it into an application.

Once it does, I have the same problems accessing the Tomcat admin control panel, the JSP and Servlet demos (I can't) I had with the conf file.
Once I remove the war and the installed webapp, I can access the tomcat admin panel again.

I haven't tried this myself.. so I might be off base here. If the
*only* thing you did to tomcat was put the .war file in tomcat's webapp
directory, and you can't run the demos & admin webapp, then that is a
pretty big problem with tomcat. Maybe you should do a fresh install of
tomcat to make sure you have all the tomcat .jar files and not any from
forrest.

I see your point.
Here is what I did.

I performed a fresh install of Tomcat 5.0.28 (I did not upgrade from TC
5.0.27)
I had already compiled cocoon 2.1.5.1 into a war, so I put that war into
TC's webapp dir.
TC unraveled the war and installed cocoon and the samples.
At this point I am able to access everything: JSP/Servlet examples, TC Admin
Panel and Cocoon Samples.
I then put a xindice.war into webapp, TC unraveled it and installed the
webapp.
At this point I am still able to access everything, plus the Xindice 'Ugly
DB Tool'.
Now I put the forrest 0.6 compiled war into webapp and let TC unravel and
install it; which it did.
Now I cannot access the JSP/Servlet examples or the TC Admin Panel. I can
still access Cocoon.

This may be a Tomcat problem, but it seems pretty specific to Forrest's
webapp.

Perhaps you are not reading the messages that come to the
screen when doing 'forrest'. It is not a case of "the build fails".
There is one link that is broken (FOR-284). The rest of the site
generation is fine, so don't get hung up on this.

Have you tried starting with the fresh Tomcat and just adding
forrest-0.6-dev ?
... i.e. no Cocoon, no Xindice, and no forrest-0.5.1

Perhaps you are not reading the messages that come to the
screen when doing 'forrest'. It is not a case of "the build fails".
There is one link that is broken (FOR-284). The rest of the site
generation is fine, so don't get hung up on this.

Yes, a completely new install of TC 5.0.28 with no non-bundled webapps allows access to admin panel and the JSP/Servlet examples
Adding the forrest 0.6 war to the webapps dir stops that access. Since I can't get into the Admin Panel, I can't start forrest0.6, so the forrest site isn't working either.

Have you tried starting with the fresh Tomcat and just adding
forrest-0.6-dev ?

Just for kicks I installed Tomcat 5.5.1 and Sun's JSDK 1.5.0.
The behavior is exactly the same as far as forrest-0.6 goes.

Do the tomcat logs show anything useful?

You should ask about this on the tomcat mailing list. Even if our webapp
isn't correct it shouldn't interfere with other parts of tomcat.

We may have closed this issue (FOR-277) pre-maturally.
I don't disagree that Tomcat may have an issue, but something about
forrest-0.6 really sets it off.
I have deployed several webapps and wars under Tomcat 5.5.1, including
forrest 0.5.1 and everything works fine.
Deploying forrest 0.6 is breaking Tomcat for some reason.

I can see a finger-pointing game starting up here, but that's not going to
resolve the issue.

I think I would leave FOR-277 open at least until we hear back from Tomcat.
