How to Setup Multilanguage Site!

Forrest Users,

I'm new to forrest but managed to install forrest and do a forrest seed. This resulted in the well known example site! I'm trying to build an experimental site using forrest. It needs to have pages partly in English and Dutch. I've tried to find some info regarding how to tackle this problem, but have found nothing suitable. All that I've found is to technical, sorry!

Can anybody give some hints on how to start solving this problem? I'd like to use for example a second level tab to switch from English to Dutch. Buttons to switch language on the a page will also suffice.

By the way, do I need to study the cocoon manual to start using forrest effectively?

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Verhaag, Gerard

I have recently contributed some dutch info to forrest. Specifically for
the test site, the menu items and the tabs.

I am now trying to pull the info together for making i18n stuff for
Forrest easier to access. I could use your help in doing this.

No, not to my knowledge.

Hoi,

It seems that this topic is not interesting enough to get responses, which is rather disappointing, sorry!

I don't think I can contribute any further because I don't understand the world of XML enough to be of any serious help!

Some questions remain however! For example, what is the meaning of all the catalog entries in the menu_*.xml of the translations directory? Can anybody tell how to use them? Thanks!

Bye,
Gerard

It has nothing to do with interesting or not, but that is a often
discussed topic. We need better documentation about it.

Here another link that may help
http://www.mail-archive.com/cgi-bin/htsearch?config=user_forrest_apache_org&restrict=&exclude=&words=i18n

So you can point out sharp corners and may write down the step you took
to activate i18n.

I think best to read this
http://cocoon.apache.org/2.1/userdocs/i18nTransformer.html

The menu_*.xml are catalogues:
http://cocoon.apache.org/2.1/userdocs/i18nTransformer.html#Catalogues
+(Dictionaries)

If this does not help, please ask again.

Hey you (Pink Floyd)

Thanks for the suggested information! I'll certainly go through it!

But I'm afraid that my knowledge about xml, dtd's, schema's and xslt is insufficient to tackle this multilanguage topic! Knowledge about all this is definitely needed to configure forrest to one's own needs, sorry!

But I'll keep trying, and will return to this topic later on!

RE: How to Setup Multilanguage Site! [In reply to]

Hoi Forresters,

After some reading, I tried the following using forrest-0.7:

forrest seed
set i18n in forrest.properties to true
copied site.xml to site_de.xml and added some German text

In Internet Explorer choose German using Tools > Internet Options.. (General tab Languages), as my first language!

What happened:

Menu showed up in German but index.html was displayed not index_de.html!

What am I doing something wrong?

Gerard

Note: Should be index.de.xml instead of index_de.xml!

I don't ask to Gerard who is working with the 0.7 but if anyone knows...

Never tried myself, but should work since the implementation is AFAIR
skin independent.

Just tried. ;)

http://localhost:8888/samples/demo-i18n.html?locale=fr

Shows french so yes it works.

...but the navigation (menu/tabs) is not switching to french. Meaning we
need to control the matches in the dataModel.xmap.

RE: How to Setup Multilanguage Site! [In reply to]

Hoi Forrest Users,

It's still about the multilanguage topic, so I posted this message using the same thread!

I've managed to play a bit with multilanguage features of forrest, after some difficulties. But subscribing to this list has given me some insight in this topic. Thanks!

However I've another question related to the Dutch (nl) language. Messages in the layout of the page (e.g. Last Published, Font Size) are not being rendered in Dutch. Am I right in saying that this has to do with the fact that in the directory apache-forrest-0.7/main/webapp/skins/common/translations there exists no CommonMessages_nl file?

Is it possible to add such a file in the current project I'm working at?

Is it perhaps possible to add full Dutch support in a future release of forrest?

Thanks!

Regards,
Gerard

Yes (at least I think so, I've never used i18n)

> Is it possible to add such a file in the current project I'm working at?

Yes. Just add it in the relevant location on your local Forrest
installation.

> Is it perhaps possible to add full Dutch support in a future release of forrest?

Yes, please add the file to an issue in our Jira tracker and a committer
will add it to SVN so that it gets included in future releases. Your
contribution would be most welcome.
