milter?

Just out of curiosity, is there any plan for adding milter support to exim?

If someone provides reasonable quality patches then we will integrate
them.

I don't currently see anyone who seems particularly bothered by milters
so I am not really expecting to see milter functionality - this was
first raised more than 10 years back.

I don’t know about “better”, but it’s different. Essentially it’s an MTA plugin framework that’s already supported by sendmail and postfix.

If one wants to 'mine' the archives, ISTR several instances wherein
pre-existing milters - cases where an entity making a migration had a
significant investment in a milter - have been interfaced to Exim.

It is rare largely because Exim can do internally all the things that a
separate milter is needed for on 'different' MTA.

There is a learning curve, yes. But it leads to a few more lines in
~configure rather than need of a third-party milter that has its own
separate syntax and devel cycle.

Ultimately, the integral-to-Exim approach becomes easier to maintain.
Ergo, I'd not expect to see much more in the way of milter use being
developed than Exim already has several usable 'hooks' for, even if one
wishes to NOT use Exim's internal toolsets.

Re: milter? [In reply to]

Just to clarify - I have no objections whatsoever to work being done
to provide a milter interface/api/whatever to exim, as long as it is
done in a clean fashion.

A way of reusing mail filtering/transformation code between platforms
would, in most cases, be a good thing.

However, realistically, this is not going to get done unless someone
has that particular itch that needs scratching, and so gets on and
does that development work. I suspect that, based on whats happened
over the last years, thats unlikely.

[.Not speaking for any other exim developers/maintainers explicitly,
but I do know they would like a clean rather than a hacked solution.]

I agree. Personally I would want it for the sole purpose of being
able to use Murray's main project (opendkim) instead of the built in
DKIM. I have no complaints about exim's DKIM support, I would just
like to standardize our site (half sendmail, half exim) to use the
same DKIM software.

Last year, I worked on adapting some beginnings of code that a
gentleman had done against 4.66 as part of a graduate project. My c
fu is weak sauce though, so I never got much beyond planting his
beginning code into current exim. The code is not useful yet and it's
a bit beyond my skillset and time availability.

I would use it, but don't have the skills to see it through to fruition.
