Message Frozen

Hi All,

Absolutely new to Linux/Exim/Apache, etc..

I got exim installed and tried using PHP to send a test mail. It did not
work.
I checked a "maillog" and, among many messages many said:
"Apr 25 16:22:25 fergweb exim[1223]: 2002-04-25 16:45:37 170m8n-0000Eb-00
Message is frozen."

What's happening here? What have I failed to do? Can you please point me in
the right direction. Thanks

The first thing to do is look for other log messages pertaining to
that message. The string '170m8n-0000Eb-00' is the message's ID. You
can grep for that in the log and one of the lines should tell you why
it is frozen. Eg:
$ grep 170m8n-0000Eb-00 /var/log/exim/mainlog

Once you have found the reason the message is frozen we can try to
determine a solution.

one thing to add here. exim comes with a nice utility called
'exigrep'. it does some nice formatting and aggregating of the output,
so instead of the above, i suggest `exigrep 170m8n-0000Eb-00
/var/log/exim/mainlog'

fire up eximon
you can check to see why a message is stuck, or you can use exigrep

/usr/exim/bin/exigrep 170m8n-0000Eb-00 /var/log/exim/mainlog

There you go...somewhere along the line you are trying to send mail to
root@<nothing>. Could be a PHP problem or an exim problem.

I suggest that you break the job up - either learn SMTP (quite easy -
search for "RFC SMTP" and read) and test email sending that way, or use a
simple program like mail. In fact, whatever you are setting up I suggest
this approach - do the job in small steps, and test at each stage.

Also note that from the appearance of your logs, you have a lot of
messages in your exim queue. You may want to get rid of some of them.
Use exim -bp to list messages
exim -Mrm <message-id> to remove a message
