How-to AirPlay question

Hello all,
I have followed instructions per

http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/AirTunes/AirPlay

How do I actually use this? Say if I have a video under iPhone/iPad, how
would I have it to play on Myth; now that I have followed the steps?

BTW, I did *not* get the "Failed to read the RAOP" part, but I still went
ahead and did all the steps.

Thanks,

Ash

Basically, you play the video on your iOS device, then change the output.
There is a little box on your iOS device screen with an arrow on the lower
right (I believe). Select that box and find the mythtv output and that's
it -- it plays on your mythtv frontend.

That being said, I have not attempted this yet. I've just done this with
my AppleTV 2 and my XBMC box.

Good luck!

That's right. I set up airplay last night and it works a treat. Just start playing the content on your IOS device (e.g. video, music, you tube etc) and an extra control (the box with the arrow) pops up on the IOS device next to the play/pause controls to direct the output to your frontend. I tried it playing music and videos from my iphone and ipad2 and it was flawless. the volume can be controlled from the IOS device, and you can seek through video using your TV remote. It's very cool.

This article explains:

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4437

Cheers,

Jon

Re: How-to AirPlay question [In reply to]

I followed the instructions too and I can see the device listed on my iPhone as a target. But I just get Errors in my fronted log "no session id in http request"

Are there packages that are required to support this feature, that I may be missing?

Re: How-to AirPlay question [In reply to]

I do *not* see any airplay icon - and it seems that is the case because
there is no air-play options.

To re-iterate, right from the beginning, I never got the message "No RAOP
found". I still went ahead on my Frontend and created RAOP.rsa where I
pasted the key.

Anything I can check (services, etc) to confirm if my side is installed ok?

Regards,
Ash

Where did you get your mythfrontend from, did you compile it yourself?

You need to build with openssl dev installed

Re: How-to AirPlay question [In reply to]

Yes, I compiled it - got it from http://code.mythtv.org/trac

I am no linux guru - I barely make it. I had openssl installed, i now have
devel also installed.

[root [at] F ~]# rpm -qa | grep openssl
openssl-1.0.0-20.el6_2.3.i686
openssl-devel-1.0.0-20.el6_2.3.i686

I restarted avahi-daemon service, AirPlay didn't work. So I restarted the
Frontend. I still do not see the RAOP message anywhere. This is what I see
- no AirPlay.

It's obviously not compiled with RAOP...

the output of configure would help troubleshooting your problem

Re: How-to AirPlay question [In reply to]

So should I "recompile" the whole thing?

Just to be on same page -- go to mythplugins (under mythtv), do a
distclean, do a ./configure --prefix=/usr and then make, make install.

Is this what I am supposed to do?

I just want to see the output of your configure command.
I'm not asking you to recompile yet (though you will have to)

Yes, recompile after you've installed the openssl dev package.

Re: How-to AirPlay question [In reply to]

how do I get output of the configure command? Do you mean the list of
plugins it says it installed? If so, here it is:

[root [at] F mythplugins]# ./configure --prefix=/usr
Disabling MythZoneMinder. Requires mysql/mysql.h header

Configuration settings:

qmake /usr/lib/qt47/bin/qmake

MythArchive plugin will be built
MythBrowser plugin will be built
MythGallery plugin will be built
MythGame plugin will be built
MythMusic plugin will be built
MythNetvision plugin will be built
MythNews plugin will be built
MythWeather plugin will be built
MythZoneMinder plugin will not be built
OpenGL support will be included in MythGallery
EXIF support will be included in MythGallery
Dcraw support will be included in MythGallery
libcdio support will be included in MythMusic
FFTW support will not be included in MythMusic

I have done a "make distclean" and then a "./configure --prefix=/usr" and
"make/make install" again. Still same thing. I do not see a RAOP message of
any kind...

you do not have to use the --enable-vdpau, --enable-libass etc.. they
will be autodetected

Well, everything you need for RAOP is there...

I think you will save yourself a great deal of trouble if you simply
used a packaged version of mythtv. There are binary distributions (or
source for things like gentoo) for virtually of distributions out
there.

Re: How-to AirPlay question [In reply to]

My friend who also has Myth helps me with issues. I started compiling this
myself in the hope to learn a bit more about linux. However, that is
besides the point. For some reason, even though I have got the fixes/0.25
and compiled it per instructions, something is not working - which is why I
need help.

Thanks,

Ash

Did you rerun configure, without options, in the base source directory, and then run the make, and install yet?

Please stop top posting. Trim the quote and write your message below.
Thanks.

I didn't want to offend you in any way. I just wanted to point out that
there are other and easier ways to install MythTV. Especially if the WAF
is important to you ;-) If you want to learn about linux, then that's a
valid reason...

I wouldn't describe me as a beginner nor as "linux champ", but I chose
to use the Mythbuntu repository, since the whole system has to run at
the end of the day when GF comes home ;-)

My apologies for top-posting. No offence taken as far as to why I am not
getting a packaged version. I have been doing this for 6 odd years now, and
slowly getting better. There was a time when I couldn't do jack unless my
friend here helped me out. Now I can do over 50% with this discussion forum
help. So I believe in the next 6 yrs, I should be able to get somewhere!!!
:)

I think the problem was that I did not do make/make install after
installing openssl-devel. I did that under mythplugins (now I know better -
plugins have nothing to do with the AirPlay).

I now see RAOP message - but since I am remote, and via XMING, I am not
sure what I should be seeing.

Just to be funky - I tried SSL VPNing in home on my iPhone, I believe
broadcast/multicast are enabled on my FW as well. But it doesn't see it. I
can only know once I get back home from work to see if it really works.

You're cutting the logs too much

Make sure you update the source code to today's version.... it will
likely work better for you

Perhaps a stupid question, but do you have a firewall
running on your frontend? It may be blocking network

No, but I still went ahead and stopped iptables, selinux (already disabled)
and ip6tables.

Still nothing. I am not even sure what menu I need to be on in Mythtv while
doing this, but I definitely am not seeing any AirPlay icon on my iPhone or
my ipad (or iTunes - but the wiki says it's not on there anyways)

Well, according to those logs ; you should.

Make sure the iPhone is on the same subnet as your frontend...

Otherwise, as far as mythtv is concerned, everything is as it should be

Seems like some people are saying that if it's WPA-PSK2 on Wireless it
wouldn't work. I tried making it Open - just to test - but nothing...

Just out of curiosity, what version of iOS are you running on your devices?
I believe AirPlay streaming of videos wasn't implemented until 4.2.1 or
thereabouts. (This shouldn't prevent your devices from streaming audio to
MythFrontend, though, so I don't think it's actually the problem)

I am on the latest - on both iPad 2 & iPhone 4. Just to be clear - there is no place in myth we have to put our apple/iTunes id?

The MYTHTV_AIRPLAY="1" only tells the frontend to register a *second*
device, this second one being a 'Video' device, in the LAN broadcasts.
Without it, the audio-only device still will be registered.

I'm on WPA-PSK2 and it's working fine (other than the audio dropouts I
mentioned on another thread of course), FYI.

Nope. Airplay doesn't need/utilize apple ids.

I am on CentOS 6 Final. I want to set it up so that it would
automatically start myth when I reboot; but currently it just comes up
in X mode; I open a terminal and give "mythfrontend -O
ThemePainter=qt" command.

(I can't just give "mythfrontend" command - I have opened another
thread -- it only displays blank page without menus - and tries
OpenGL)

You can add it to your /etc/environment file and it will be preserved on
reboot and set for all users.

Thank you. The file /etc/environment was empty; I put in "export
MYTHTV_AIRPLAY="1" in it; saved it.

Appreciate it.

Re: How-to AirPlay question [In reply to]

After installing "avahi-utils" - when I give "avahi-browse -a" command, I
now see airplay being enabled. On my iTunes, I do see now the icon. I am
not home, but this looks very promising.

I had to do "git pull", then just for the heck of it, i did a disctlean and
reconfigured, compiled - and it seems good so far. Will send out an updated
email once I am home.

A rather stupid question -- "Where" do I need to be on mythtv when I am
doing airplay? Like, do I need to be on "Play Music" when trying to do
music? Or "Watch Recordings" when I am trying to push a video from my
iPhone?

Thanks,

Ash

As it stands -- I do not see any airplay icon on my iphone 4 (current iOS)
nor iPad 2 (latest iOS). As soon as i turn on my iTunes, it does show me
the icon on it - although it doesn't work.

Thank you.

I just realized this: when I do AirPlay (audio only) - it plays okay
(Barring intermittent audio interruptions). However, when I do video
files, my file does not play - no wonder I do not get anything on the
myth. My video position bar remains at the same place. The screen on
my iphone/iPad tells me "it's now playing on your TV" but after 20 sec
if I touch it, the position bar would still be at the start position.
Tried this multiple times. This only happens when doing Myth
AirPlay...

Thanks,

Ash

Please upgrade to the lastest version of fixes/0.25

All the issues you've seen so far should be fixed now.
You shouldn't experience any audio interruptions anymore and AirPlay
video should work perfectly, including seeking in YouTube application.

AirPlay both audio only and video will now work using iTunes.

If you still have issues, please report back

Regards
Jean-Yves

I'm running the latest 25-fixes via mythbuntu
(v0.25-59-gae7ac79).

Audio generally works well. Playback is occasionally choppy, but i'm
willing to blame that on my 3GS.
Video works fine via the youtube app, or any website that embeds youtube links.

Have never successfully got video to work from Apples "Trailers" app,
or from Sony's "Crackle" video streaming app (free).
In both cases the mythtv box gives the "Please Wait" window for a few
seconds, but never plays through. On the phone the screen changes as
if the video is streaming, and the play icon in the title bar pops on
and off a few times, but nothing comes through.

When i get some time later today I'll see if there are any
mythfrontend logs to go with it.

P.S. HUUUUGE thanks for all your development work on this. I wasn't
event expecting the feature and it's become my most used new
functionality in 0.25. Cheers!

Which doesn't include any of the changes I mentioned earlier

it's not your 3GS, but the AirPlay server

> Video works fine via the youtube app, or any website that embeds youtube links.

except that you can't seek and that the iPhone never properly shows
what is being currently played.
And when you exit playback on the iPhone, playback continues on myth
and you have to manually exit the video

none of your reports are interesting in regards to what I was
discussing just then...

Your thanks should go to Mark Kendall.
He's the one who introduced that feature.

I have rewritten most of it, but he's the one who implemented it first

There are two ways videos can be streamed from an iPhone to an AirPlay
server (usually an Apple TV)
1-By streaming the mp4/m4v video as-is.
Or 2-by using HTTP Live Streaming

mythtv only supports 1.

I hope that 0.26 will support HTTP Live Streaming.
