Imap Crashes

Hello,

I've been running dbmail for several years, the 2.x version had a very stable imap process. The 3.x version, the imap service is completely unstable. I've used the latest 3.11 build as well as several builds between the 3.x release to no avail. I'm also running the imap service on multiple servers with and without load and they still crash. Sometimes multiple times per day. Now I have monit monitoring the imap process and restarting it if it fails and it restarts the imap process frequently. I've used different libzdb versions as well without any help on the matter. Sometimes the imap process is still running but you can't connect to it, if you telnet to it during this time it is listening to the imap port but doesn't return the imap banner indicating a successful connection. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on all the boxes.

Thanks,

Masood

Not really. The pre-forking architecture just means you don't notice
when a imapd process crashes.

3.0.2 has been running on some quite large and heavy loaded systems.

Non-responsive systems can sometimes be solved by running:

export EVENT_NOEPOLL=yes dbmail-imapd

Crashes as such can have all kinds of root-causes. No point in me guessing.

and pre-forking is not scaleable for Imap - keep in mind that clients have for each folder a own connection - 1000 clients with 3 folders mean 3000 processes and 3000 database connections and finally you need many GB RAM only for mysql buffers besides the footprint of the Imap processes - in doubt it may be more stable because a process can die in peace without impact on other connections but the price is high
