DBMail 3.1.1 released

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

Hi all,

3.1.1 is out!

It is a bug-fix only release. It fixes some issues with IMAP returning
a 'BAD invalid sequence' response, when it really shouldn't.

Downloads:

http://git.dbmail.eu/paul/dbmail/snapshot/dbmail-3.1.1.tar.gz

enjoy it.

Hi,

dburi deprecation warning breaks pop3d when I use it from xinetd. It
looks like pop3d outputs it to stdout.

I've removed it. It's not a real error. It's quite possible that an UID
STORE command was issued for a no-longer existing UID. That's what the
last pre-3.1.1 fix was for.

Good to hear!

Keep me posted as to the memory footprint of imapd. Like I said, for me
it's flat, but more confirmation is most welcome.

ah - ok - thanks

BTW:
do you have a parallel-mtp-insert test somewhere?

both cases below was for messages with 4 recpients splitted by postfix into
seperate messages beause for forwarders where no physical inbox involved i
split them this way to avoid LMTP at all in case of external forwarders

looks like postfix logs 4 times "to=<xxx [at] xx>, orig_to=<yyy [at] yyy>"
mostly because one of our servers has over 7000 external forwarders

looks currently damned good

dbmail-imapd 40 MB RES / 480 MB VIRT in htop
never saw such low memory footprint since 3.0.0

i hate it to say but i recently downgraded to 3.0.2
snapshot 22b964b653ba149b63b9b6787aeac7803c2121e5
after so much joy having a new release out :-(

POP3 seems to damage massages in a unpredictable way
on both Thunderbird and AppleMail by display a lot
of wired chars while exactly the same message in
roundcubemail via IMAP is completly fine

i sent Paul two screenshots from a message of a
colleague and currently can not risk to debug
this online - i will try to find a way to reproduce
this with whatever testmessages in my test-VM

the colleague did not know about the mailserver-upgrade
and came in my room asking "are you doing anything on
the mailserver?"

On 07/25/2013 04:26 PM, Reindl Harald wrote:

That is what test-scripts/testlmtp.py is for: concurrent connections to
lmtp. There is no specific test in there to insert the same message on
multiple concurrent connections, though.

But then: having postfix or any other MTA open multiple connections to a
single dbmail-lmtpd process is possible, but makes no sense at all.

dbmail-lmtpd is single-threaded, so in terms of throughput there is no
point. In fact, no process other than the multi-threaded dbmail-imapd
needs a max_db_connections greater than 1 (one)!

I'll modify the default dbmail.conf to reflect that advise.

So: set lmtp_destination_concurrency_limit = 1 in your main.cf, or tune
the maxproc field of your lmtp (or dbmail-lmtp) entry in master.cf

If one single dbmail-lmtpd doesn't provide enough throughput, consider
running dbmail-lmtpd in inetd mode (using the -D switch). For each
postfix-lmtp connection a separate dbmail-lmtpd process will then be
started automatically.

So:

- Use a single connection database pool for lmtpd
- Don't let postfix open more than one single connection to dbmail-lmtpd
- If you need more than one lmtp channel, run dbmail-lmtpd from inetd

Making dbmail-lmtpd scale better would require making it multi-threaded,
like imapd. A rather significant project in and of itself.

Can you send me the raw message, so I can take a look at it? I'll try to
work on this asap, but not before next week, I expect :-(

that's a different story
the settings are the sam esince more than a year

i am not sure what happens

i have seen the "lost connection with 127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1] while sending end of data --
message may be sent more than once" *one* time due testing with a single
20 MB message and that was the primary reason for my "5000 messages with 1 MB"
bulk script and after that did have no single issue i thought "well, nobody
knows, i go in producton because it's unlikely to happen again"

uhm how do i get this raw message out
can we please share a IMAP connection off-list?

* i move the message to INBOX
* receive via POp3 -> message destroyed
* i move the message in a different folder and back to inbox
* POP3 says "oh a new message"
* same result
* predictable

:-)

You may be making some noise here.
That can happen for example if a mailbox is full,

for sure - no

may web-backend watchs about quota and there is none above
and the messages from the production server where from

even if - a full inbox looks like below and the behavior above would be
a regression instead of unexpectable close connection prevent
"quota_failure = hard" and a bounce to take action

Ok, got it. Looks like a small problem, and I have a failing unit-test :-(

Jenkins is on the top of my list these days.

glad to hear - thank you very much!

is it possible to get a fix on the GIT from v3.1.1 without the new things
from "APPENDUID feature" and following commits to save the whole test
session and rollout finally 3.1.1 or 3.1.2 in production sometimes
next week?

no stress - 22b964b653ba149b63b9b6787aeac7803c2121e5 is rolled back
and in production since more than a year, whatever bugs it has they
are known and people live with it :-)

Re: DBMail 3.1.1 released [In reply to]

Hmm,

dbmail-imapd uses VIRT 2907M and RES 495M Memory running 1 Day and one
thread seams to be in an endless loop using 100% of on core, I restarted
dbmail and we will see what happens.

No, those messages are sent to stderr. You can either set
file_logging_level=0 or start with a redirect:

dbmail-pop3d -n 2>/var/log/dbmail/error.log

sure. 3.1.2 will only contain bugfixes, no new features.

thank you - IMHO there are 3:

* POP3 message damage
* IMAP: remove redundant logging during STORE
* hopefully we can debug the SQL syntax error from Sergej too

i have seen no SQL errors in all the tests, but sounds like random clients
are doing uncommon commands - i slightly start to hate the IMAP standard
because it feels like a non-standard by having a ton of ways to do the same
thing instead "list messages of folder X" as a 100% predictable result
and whatever the client display is his job........

have a nice weekend!

All three fixed now.

IMAP is nice, but complex.

If and when the avid testers confirm my last fixes.
