Re: Push email [In reply to]

Hi there,

I assume you are using Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) and this one
does have support for IMAP, which is something you get from dbmail.
Direct integration offered by RIM for Microsoft Exchange and Lotus
Notes is not available atm. Also IMAP support in BES is very basic and
fundamental, so I guess dbmail is not the right thing for you.
As calendar won´t work, also no contacts and BES can only access the
users inbox, no other folders at all! This of course might change in
the future, but my guess is that RIM is more focused on their Exchange
and Notes integration so it will most likely not happen soon.

Kind regards,
Daniel

Re: Push email [In reply to]

Well, I have my push email on an iPhone, but that is merely because
the device supports IMAP directly and still that only works for emails.
I do not know about the current Blackberry devices, but if you can
sync them directly with IMAP that can work as well.

Re: Push email [In reply to]

i have successfully setup full push email to nokia phones using
z-push.sf.net against a dbmail imap store.

No calendar/todo/contact sync though. Just email. Some work was underway
on those other channels last time I looked, but I'm not very current there.

Re: Push email [In reply to]

Hello Mohd,

MR> Any ide how tosetup push email with dbmail ?

"push email" in the sense of an iPhone comes from Apple's servers
keeping in constant contact with every phone, and doing something
similar to (but not the same as) an SMTP transaction to the target
phone when the subscriber's me.com account receives a message. This
means the phone does not have to retrieve the message.

iPhones can also use a similar feature available in Exchange Server
known as "ActiveSync" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ActiveSync , and
implemented in some server software like Zimbra
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zimbra .

I'm getting pressure from my business partner to "do something" to
make his iPhone work better, so I've been looking at Zimbra as a
possible front end to dbmail, or just set up one domain to use Zimbra,
to get him to shut up about how email keeps killing his iPhone's
battery...

Like I said, ActiveSync is exactly what Z-Push does. Works with *any*
imap server. No need to use zimbra or funambol (brrr).

Too bad the download server for z-push seems to be inaccessible right
now...

Re[4]: Push email [In reply to]

Hello Mohd,

Yes, but it seems they've programmed their server to not allow
connections from the United States. Anyone reading this list from the
U.S. will have to find someone outside the country to download it and
then (in violation of the author's license) forward it to us.

http://z-push.sourceforge.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=113

Zimbra doesn't have this restriction, despite implementing even more
of Microsoft's protocols than Z-push...

Re: Push email [In reply to]

Ah yes, an export clause in the license. I wasn't aware of that one.

Anyway, it always seemed to me that activesync with email only, is no
improvement over IMAP-IDLE, really.

There's no real push in either, anyway.

Perhaps not, but many mobile clients doesn't seem to implement IDLE
properly (or at all), so for those platforms ActiveSync in fact helps
notifying the user about the availability of mail sooner anyway. Which
in itself *is* an improvement.
