clamd very slow on e-mail scanning

Has anyone else noticed a real slowdown in clamd scanning times on this
last build? I started getting timeouts from clamd on my e-mail scanner
and had to raise the timeout limit to cope with this build. Scanning the
same e-mail with clamscan vs clamdscan, I see about 3 seconds on
clamscan vs 31 seconds on clamdscan. That's for the exact same file, run
one right after the other on the same build. This happens to only SOME
e-mail messages, not all. I'm sure I can probably find a copy to test
with if you need it.

Yes, I have seen it too. The number of timeouts have more than doubled for
me too.

But clamd is not crashing anymore, so I am happy.

Don't know if I can do this, but here is an attempt at attaching a file
that causes the long scan time.

So I was using this as the main scanner on our e-mail server, but the
30-second delays were starting to cause delay issues for e-mail
delivery. I switched to the 0.90 version of SOSDG's clamd and the
problems went away. There's something wrong in this build. I'll test it
again as soon as a new version is out.

I suspect Nigel must be busy with other stuff. I know how that is.
Thankfully there was an alternative to swtich to.

No, I just have no concrete evidence of what, if anything, is wrong.

Thanks to Nigel, who helped me clear this up. One of the default options
set in clamd.conf is "MailFollowURLs Yes". If you change that to
"MailFollowURLs No", the problem goes away. The delay is caused by clamd
trying to load data from the URL in the e-mail message. The default
configuration for the SOSDG version is "MailFollowURLs No", so that is
why theirs works by default and the W32 version does not.

I thought I'd report the solution back here in case any of you want to
simply disable that feature rather than switch versions (which
essentially solves this by disable the very same feature).

Bret
