clamd high memory use

I'm running clamd on a CentOS 6 Linux VPS with 1.2GB of overall memory.

clamd is using 300MB of memory - a quarter of the box's memory. (309m
VIRT/272m RES). Recycling clamd results in very similar usage right after
startup (296m/271m)

I'm wondering if there is a way to reduce this memory footprint?

Which version, and do you use extra databases?
I have much lower mem usage:
2008 clamav 20 0 211m 140m 6260 S 0 1.8 6:27.44 clamd

ClamAV 0.97.4 - pretty much stock.

Try changing MaxThreads to balance memory usage and concurrency, and check
Pool memory usage with clamdtop.

The box is virtually idle - no one is using it and maybe getting one email
an hour if that.

In clamdtop:

Under "MEM" it says 275M.

The Pool line is:

Pool: count 1 used 274M total 274M

MaxThreads was commented out, so it defaulted to 10. I dropped it to 4 and
clamd is the same:

5275 root 25 0 296m 271m 480 S 0.0 22.3 0:00.00 clamd

MEM still says 275M and the pool line is unchanged:

Pool: count 1 used 274M total 274M

Excluding blank lines and comments, my clamd.conf is pretty simple:

# grep -v "^#" clamd.conf | grep -v "^$"
LocalSocket /var/clamd
FixStaleSocket yes
MaxThreads 4
ScanMail yes
#

I checked and these are the databases:
