SubmitDetectionStats Error

I've seen this in the last three freshclam runs:

ERROR: SubmitDetectionStats: Remote server reported temporary failure:
under maintenance

Curious as to whether anyone else sees the same

I'm seeing:

Nov 16 15:14:29 fvs-pri freshclam[26543]: SubmitDetectionStats:
Incorrect answer from server

But I just started to setup "SubmitDetectionStats yes" today and figured
that it was a configuration issue in my setup.

As of 16-Nov-2009 2120UTC I still getting this:

daily.cld is up to date (version: 10029, sigs: 105549, f-level: 44,
builder: ccordes)
ERROR: SubmitDetectionStats: Incorrect answer from server

I wonder what is happening to the Stats Server?

Re: SubmitDetectionStats Error [In reply to]

Hello,

the stats server is "under maintenance" as freshclam is reporting to some
of you.

I don't know why some of you are getting a different error message, I'll
investigate that.

I expect it to be back online in ~24h.

Best regards

The 2pm to 4pm (eastern US time) check gave "Incorrect answer from
server", but the 5pm and onward check gives the "Remote server reported
temporary failure: under maintenance".

And it appears that it is Luca. I've not seen any errors after those
this morning at 4;19am CST.

Pardon this one's humble opinion and this is not meant to start a
flame war but...

You know this whole situation does sound more than a little hobby
shoppy. Doesn't SourceFire feel more than a little embarrassed?

I can't imagine the it would be that hard to at least spool the
reports for later processing. Further your stats web site states
"VRT Active Malware Report at 22:16 on 11/19/09 GMT" today which is
clearly not true.

If you are going to provide a "realtime" service such as your stats
then you should post reliable status of the service. Its been 7 days
and still no status report posted to the stats page!

This can't be all that hard.

Just my 2 cents.

Me too. Anyone from Sourcefire care to comment on why it's taking so long for your company to sort this out?

The amount that I pay Sourcefire for support of Snort and ClamAV is really none of your business, particularly in a public forum...

Speaking of appropriate use of a public forum, let's all please take
it down a notch. If the complaint is with Sourcefire, then perhaps it
should be made on a Sourcefire mailing list. There's obviously nothing
wrong with asking about ClamAV services on this list and I think there
are many, like myself, who would agree that the availability of the
service is important and relevant, but it's a bit annoying to have a
Sourcefire war on a ClamAV list.

... and I want to be clear that I think the snide comments are as bad
or worse as the tone of the complaint.

Thanks,
Robert

The service is back online.

We are trying to do the best that we can with the resources we have.

I had to take the service down because we were running short of space
and our budget currently doesn't allow to allocate more resources to this
service.

Admittedly, this sucks.

Good news is that I made use of this time to add support for "per user
statistics", a new feature that will be launched together with 0.96
(see our roadmap: http://www.clamav.net/about/roadmap).

I'm always receptive to constructive criticism and advice and I'm happy
that so many people on this mailing list were able to provide such an
high-level feedback in this occasion.

Thanks to all of you!

Luca,

I must admit that I do not understand what kind of space issues would
require bringing an entire realtime reporting system offline for a
week. That said, I and others on this list do appreciate your efforts
especially under budget constraints.

I do feel that if clamav/sourcefire is going to provide any realtime
service, such as stats or your standard signature distributions, you
need to provide a status page, maybe using mrtg or something
equivalent along with manual generated messages when situations
become dire, to inform the user community of what is going on.
Realtime systems owe their users proactive reporting and not
responses to list questions such as "are you down?" hours or days
later.

The scheduled capabilities in your roadmap for deployment just 70 to
90 days away include even more realtime services such as extended and
per user stats and infrastructure for 3rd party stats yet there is no
mention of a clamav.net infrastructure operational status reporting
system nor hardware upgrades to mitegate the current lack of
capabilities.

Based upon your budget and equipment constraints as stated above, the
recent outage, and considering the increased realtime services to be
made available shortly, the user community needs a status dashhboard
at clamav.net for now and for the future.

Luca, I know you are stressed and I will offer some help for this
project during my free time ;-) if you need and I am sure that others
on this list will offer support as well..

Tom

maybe we could just start with a dedicated twitter account
(clamav_infrastructure or something similar) where I could post updates
regarding planned downtimes & similar stuff.
I've seen other projects doing the same.

> Luca, I know you are stressed and I will offer some help for this

I'm not stressed, just very busy :)

> project during my free time ;-) if you need and I am sure that others on
> this list will offer support as well..

your help with this task is more than welcome.
I could use some help also with other projects which are currently
scheduled for 0.96.

I'm going to build a web interface to allow testing and publishing
3rd party CVDs through our mirror infrastructure.

0.96 will make it possible to enable third party databases by simply
turning on an option in freshclam.conf .

Best regards

Hi Luca,

I use both identi.ca and Twitter to post updates, with seemingly identi.ca
being more reliable:

In case this helps... you can post direct like this...

identi.ca:

curl -u username:password -d status="Message to update"
http://identi.ca/api/statuses/update.xml

Twitter:

curl -u username:password -d status="Message to update"
http://twitter.com/statuses/update.xml

Cheers,

I'd be happy to see it in the same twitter feed as the pattern updates.

..a bit OT, but can someone explain to me why "everyone" has moved over
to Twitter instead of doing this sort of thing via RSS? For this sort of
"real time reporting of an automated process", isn't Twitter and co just
RSS done badly?

(I'm getting old and don't understand why everyone throws out perfectly
good old technology for the Latest Thing ;-)

Twitter has SMS push if you're an account holder. So, I can get SMS alerts
to my phone, and they're free.

You can post to Twitter even when your entire IT infrastructure is down, as
long as you have enough mobile connectivity to send an SMS. Note that you
don't even need to be able to make a phone call, since an SMS can be
delivered even when the voice channel is saturated. You don't need an
Internet data channel, either.

Twitter also provide an RSS feed. So, you can follow the alerts even
without a twitter account.

Twitter provides discoverability.

I don't think Twitter becomes a replacement for your own RSS feed, it's
just another channel that you can communicate with.
