clamav 0.93 on FreeBSD 4

Hello,

I know that this was already asked, but there was no answer,
and I know that I should upgrade and It's planned but not that easy
(and I'd like to have running clamav w/o security byts until I do it)

When installing clamav on FreeBSD 4 (with -pthread option), the clamd
accepts connections but hangs and does not scan anything.

The version 0.92.1 did work w/o problems - although FreeBSD 4's libc does
not have support for kernel, only userspace threads. (the kernel supports
threads but only linuxthreads library can use them afaik)

- did anyone resolve this problem? (I don't mean changing the OS)

- were there any significant changes in the threading code beteren 0.92.1
and 0.93?

I'll try to fix this issue for a short time but if anyone can help, I'll be
glad...

Hi,

I think this question was already asked, and the answer was to try the
OpenBSD patch.
Did you try the patch from here?
https://wwws.clamav.net/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=885

Best regards,

Thanks for the pointer, Török. This patch makes clamd work fine on
FreeBSD 4.11, at least for me...

I tries and it works here, too. However I wasn't able to find it before you
answered me. Thank you.

Is this patch still required for this version found at the cvs?

http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/ports/security/clamav/

Thanks,

Well, I tried it, first without the patches: clamd hangs on connection.
And 'kill -9' kind of hanging, too. Then I applied both patches list at:

https://wwws.clamav.net/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=885

Clamd hangs on connection. And 'kill -9' kind of hanging, too. So, this
OpenBSD patch apparently does nothing for me. :(

clamscand works, btw; as does freshclam. But clamDscand, of course, not.

So, could someone please explain how they got this to work on FreeBSD
4.11?

Thanks!

- Mark

Never mind: it works now! (I had applied the patches in the 'work' dir and
then remade. Apparently that doesn't work. Applying it to the original
clamav .gz, however, did).

I gotta say, though, perhaps the single-most worry I have with clamav is
never knowing whether or not the next version will compile/work again.
It's always a gamble. But, then again, it STILL works on my FreeBSD 4.11,
so I guess I shouldn't complain. :)

You should consider yourself quite lucky. Considering that you can get
it to work on such an obsolete FreeBSD version at all is a 'plus'.
However, I am willing to bet that sooner or later you are going to have
to bite the bullet and update that dinosaur to version 7.x of FBSD.

Well, there's a reason, of course, why I (and apparently others on this
list, too) still run FreeBSD 4.11: it's their most stable release ever
made. Far as I'm concerned, everything went down-hill after version 4 and
up. Read their list. Currently Perl 5.8.8 won't even compile out of box on
FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE! And that's just one of many, many problems. So, I'll
hang on to my dinosaur for a while, if you don't mind. :)

For clamav (and other stuff) I already had to resort to the old

libpthread.so -> /usr/lib/libc_r.so.4

trick, but it STILL runs smoothly.

Regardless of OS version, though, it's always a good policy of the clamav
makers to try and not break things too radically, or change around
unnecessarily. I, for one, would be thoroughly screwed without clamav, as
there's nothing, in the UNIX market at least, that comes even come close
to clamav.

So, yes, I consider myself lucky. :)
