Queries on Clam AV

Hi Guys,
I have setup Clam on my linux box and wondering how do I go about scanning
my entire system?

I will be setting this up as a Cron job to run every fortnight to a month (I
haven't decided yet).

Also how do I get Clam to fire up when I boot the system as well as check
for any updates? I have recently done a bit of reading into Cron jobs and
partially understand them but I am not sure on the correct syntax I should
be using to accomplish this.

Lastly, once Clam is started up does it automatically scans files like
Nortons? or does it simply sit in the background until scan time comes
around?

Any help would be great and very much appreciated.

BTW, as you may have noticed I am a real n00b so if you feel I should be
reading something feel free to say so, unlike some n00bs I would rather
understand what I am doing and just add a little bit of knowledge as I move
along in my learning curve :)

Cheers
Darren

Grab the Clamav tarball. I believe in there you will find a script that can
be used to launch the daemon on boot.

find Clamav-source-directory -type f -name "*.sh".
Perhaps the one in clamav-milter/clamd.sh but you did not tell us how you
installed it so I am just assuming.

It does not. You have to tell it when to scan files. You must use it with
some Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) like Postfix, Sendmail, Exim, etc...
You must configureit also.

Yes, please read all of the documentation on the web site. It explains most
of your questions. Also, check out the man pages for clamscan, clamd and
freshclam. There are explanations and examples.

There are also copious examples of cron jobs in the clam documentation and
on google.

Re: Queries on Clam AV [In reply to]

Thanks for the help guys, I will have another read through the documentation
but I must have missed the part about cron jobs as I didn't think there was
anything there that would have been able to help me.

Thanks again.

Cheers
Darren
