Cisco CUCM v9.0

All,
upon loading the CCM9 DVD in vmware, i am not able to login.
Is there any instructions on the net to load it?
Does it come with the demo licenses like previous versions?

Thanks

Re: Cisco CUCM v9.0 [In reply to]

I installed the CUCM 9.0.1 Beta on my ESXi 5. Worked like a charm.
It comes with a 60 day demo license. License manager is included.

What do you mean cant login? You have to be more specific, incorrect
username/password, webpage not loading at all etc?

/Roger

Re: Cisco CUCM v9.0 [In reply to]

The first web page that comes up is the Enterprise Licensing Manager,
which is new.
Then when I navigate to the famaliar CCM pages, serivceablity, admin, OS
admin, the login doesn;t work and I get a database communication error.
Is there any services that need to be started on the console prior to
launching the GUI?

Thanks,

On the main splash page (http://ip.address.of.cm) do you have a link to CCMAdmin and ELM or just ELM?

Sounds like you didn't get UCM installed properly then.

When you installed it, did you check the box for ELM or CUCM? See my attachment. If you want CUCM, make sure you select it. It sounds like you accidentally chose ELM.

Thanks,
Kevin

Re: Cisco CUCM v9.0 [In reply to]

Thanks for the snapshot Kevin.

At a recent Cisco Live session, we were told that you could install ELM co-res with CallManager, it looks like the screen shot is a radio button, i.e. you can only install ELM on it's own.

Not really, you can install ELM on its own but if you install CUCM you get both.

Re: Cisco CUCM v9.0 [In reply to]

ELM is the licensing manager node that you need to install that manages licenses for the UC software such as CallManager, Unity Connection, etc (not sure what else).

It operates as a license storage node (think license pooling) for products and quantities. So if you purchase 10,000 user licenses for CallManager, you can install one, two or three clusters and share these licenses (not concurrently mind you, but as a bank).

Basically, it's the UC version of the IOS licensing manager software.

I asked why the two were separated, and the presenters did respond that it was a valid question. ;)

Ok. thanks. I'm guessing I can disable or simply not use the ELM module on the CUCM server then if I want.

Re: Cisco CUCM v9.0 [In reply to]

Ok, yes now I see during the install it is not supporting the VMWare
workstation,
It says this hardware is only compatible with the ELD.
I guess it needs an ESX for the install?

Re: Cisco CUCM v9.0 [In reply to]

Just to add to this, an important point we thought is the whole process of hosting/rehosting/backups/connections.

Unlike the IOS licensing manager version, ELM is a real-time licensing manager, i.e. there is a constant communications path between the ELM and the hosts which talk to it.

There was some interesting talk about what happens when the licenses are oversubscribed/unavailable, and in a nutshell, it was at the discretion of the product manager. So, for CallManager, things continue working, but no changes are available. For Unity, things stop working. There is a grace period I believe which is different for each product.

To make things a little more complicated on the ELM side, but easier on the product side, the licenses are hosted to the ELM. But there is no backup currently, so if you have to rebuild your ELM, you have to rehost the licenses.

This is all from memory from one of the Cisco Live Sessions and is subject to change obviously. But the jist is there.

I asked why the two were separated, and the presenters did respond that it was a valid question. ;)

Re: Cisco CUCM v9.0 [In reply to]

Sounds like you need to bump up the resources for your CUCM VM. That would explain why it only shows ELM as a selectable option and the rest are down below in the unsupported option. I am running CUCM/UCXN/CEL/UCCX 9.x beta versions with no problems in VMware Workstation 8, but 7 should be OK. For my lab, I used the following when installing:

CUCM - 2GB RAM, 160GB HD
UCXN - 4GB RAM, 160GB HD
UCCX - 4GB RAM, 160GB HD
CEL - 2GB RAM, 160GB HD

Once installed, I bump the RAM back down to 2GB. You'll probably get the unsupported TAC warning blah blah blah when booting up that you have to select Agree to, but it still works. Also, when creating the hard drives, I don't select the pre-allocated virtual disks. That way I don't have to allocate a full 80/160/300GB or whatever size initially. Sure, there is a performance hit at times, but if you are just testing things, it works. Obviously in production, you would need ESXi and use the OVA templates.

What options are you selecting for your VM?

Thanks,
Kevin

Yes, I was definitely not using enough resources 1GB and 80GB hard drive
Also, what should I use for OS, I am selecting Red Hat Ent 5?

Yes rhel 5 and I think 2gb of ram and an 80gb drive should work for cucm.
