OT: Terminal Server

Polling the massed mind for a preference.

Assuming a lights out operation, what do you guys like to use for a
terminal server / Console Server. (One of the boxes you SSH to, and you
can connect to the serial port of devices that are plugged into it.)

Mostly we're looking at 16 and 32 port densities.

Re: OT: Terminal Server [In reply to]

Just because they were available, I've used a lot of 2511 routers and
2600's with the NM-A16 or A32 cards. I don't imagine the price on ebay for
either would be high. Haven't used 3rd party. Octal cables are just fun to
look at.

Re: OT: Terminal Server [In reply to]

We exclusively use DIGI Term servers. So far they have proved pretty solid.

Re: OT: Terminal Server [In reply to]

It's been a while since I used a Digi t/s, but last time I did, they required special cables to be made to work with Cisco consoles. Is that still the case?

With the OpenGear, they have a model that uses standard RJ45s.

Re: OT: Terminal Server [In reply to]

Yes that is one drawback to them. But you can make custom cables, we've had
to in order to connect to ACME SBC's we manage.

Re: OT: Terminal Server [In reply to]

one of the things i liked about the open gear, believe it or not, was the rack mount ear they include even for their small devices. simple, and it might not seem like much, but it makes management easy when you can mount it rather than having to find a wall to screw it on to.

plus, the power cable comes with interchangeable plugs.
