Upgrading CM from 4.2 to 8.6 IOS upgrade required ?

Customer is using h323.

Unless MVA is required else can we leave the router in their original firmware ?

Re: Upgrading CM from 4.2 to 8.6 IOS upgrade required ? [In reply to]

Cisco specifies some compatibility guidelines for h.323 devices within the CUCM Compatibility list, the reality is that an H.323 Gateway is a standalone device and h.323 is a standard so I would take a stab and say that as old as the IOS might be, 95% of all functions you might require will most likely work with your current IOS but the usual Leal caveat of Your mileage may vary is also included.

Are you using IOS hardware conferencing, transcoding, or MTP?

In those cases I recommend upgrading IOS to something that supports the
right "sccp ccm <> version <>" command. This way you get the best support
for things like RFC2833 on your MTPs and Transcoders.

Otherwise I agree that the H.323 GWs themselves are mostly version
independent for compatibility.

Re: Upgrading CM from 4.2 to 8.6 IOS upgrade required ? [In reply to]

Hi Jason,
Thanks!

In that case, I'm wondering is there a recommended/compatible version by Cisco for each CUCM release? Anyone out there happens to know ?

Was looking thru it, managed to find a list of softwares including IOS released together with CUCM. However, they are simply consider same release 'train'. Not minimum version to run with CUCM or other component like ucce or uccx.

Re: Upgrading CM from 4.2 to 8.6 IOS upgrade required ? [In reply to]

There are sometimes subtle changes to h.323 that require upgrades to both devices. Example:
CSCse36579 Differences between CCM and IOS H245 non-stad ASN formats causes CPU Hog

It is best practice to follow the compatibility matrix where possible.

Either this one:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps556/products_device_support_tables_list.html
Cisco Unified Communications Manager Version 8.6
• Cisco Unified Communications Manager Software Compatibility Matrix (PDF - 1 MB) New!

Or the Cisco Unified Communications System Documentation:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/uc_system/unified/communications/system/ucstart.htm
-> http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/uc_system/UC8.6.1/release_notes/rnipt861.html

We have several h.323 gateways with conf bridges, etc. Some of the gateways are running 12.4 IOS and some 15.X,. We haven't seen any issues.
