Re: Cisco CCM 4.2 [In reply to]

Last Date of Support:
App. SW

The last date to receive service and support for the product. After this
date, all support services for the product are unavailable, and the product
becomes obsolete.

Re: Cisco CCM 4.2 [In reply to]

My VAR related this to me the other day (we are 4.1x shop):

I can tell you that there are MANY MANY 4.x installations still out there.
Some have said they will go it alone beyond 2011 without support. Others,
after having been quoted rates for upgrading to 7, have sworn they will look
at competitor offerings. Cisco has a real chance here to make a lot of
people very happy by making a transition to 7.x

I am one of those that was horrified to see what going to 7 would entail. I
am not sure where to go from here, we are very happy with 4.1(3)

Re: Cisco CCM 4.2 [In reply to]

A small installation, maybe 75 phones. To go to 7 was almost $35,000. Of
course, some of this included the VAR's work (from previous posts it does
sound like you have to spend a lot of time manually re-entering lots of
information). This was also to go from Full CCM and Unity to the Business
Edition. So yes, I was horrified! Maybe I need to look for a different
VAR, though he has always seemed to steer me right.

Re: Cisco CCM 4.2 [In reply to]

um, not sure I agree on the "manually re-entering lots of information" - that's what DMA export is all about.

but I hear you on the other costs. if you bought Cisco hardware, those were EOL'd a lot quicker than HP hardware (which Cisco doesn't EOL, the just stop supporting on new versions)

the cost of upgrading is just going to get higher and higher, especially if you want to upgrade to N+2 versions or higher.

Cisco is really pushing UCSS and CUWL so you never have to worry about things like this. Building a yearly cost associated with your phone system basically and being able to upgrade to whatever version you want.

while i understand all the arguments pertaining to cost to support, Cisco has to understand that very few people run to install vX.0 of anything unless absolutely necessary, so by the time a vX.1 version is out, it's EOL is not far off. a phone system is not like a pc where upgrading is not that big of an issue. I can see the big difference between v4 and v5 but the idea to never have a vX.2 out is a bit of a drag. they're releasing major versions a lot faster and expecting people to climb on board.

Sounds about right for how much work it can be.

A small installation, maybe 75 phones. To go to 7 was almost $35,000. Of course, some of this included the VAR's work (from previous posts it does sound like you have to spend a lot of time manually re-entering lots of information). This was also to go from Full CCM and Unity to the Business Edition. So yes, I was horrified! Maybe I need to look for a different VAR, though he has always seemed to steer me right.

Re: Cisco CCM 4.2 [In reply to]

FWIW if you are looking at upgrading right now and plan on getting UCSS, take a look at CUWL and make sure you ask your VAR to use the CUWL "Migrate Now" pricing, Cisco has dropped the upgrade SKUs by 50% at list for a limited time. I just got an apples to apples quotes of an a-la-carte upgrade with ESW/UCSS and CUWL Standard Upgrade and CUWL was cheaper.

David's quote was for going from a 4.1 pub with Unity to BE. Can't use DMA with BE.

Sounds about right for how much work it can be.

um, not sure I agree on the "manually re-entering lots of information" - that's what DMA export is all about.

but I hear you on the other costs. if you bought Cisco hardware, those were EOL'd a lot quicker than HP hardware (which Cisco doesn't EOL, the just stop supporting on new versions)

the cost of upgrading is just going to get higher and higher, especially if you want to upgrade to N+2 versions or higher.

Re: Cisco CCM 4.2 [In reply to]

To the casual observe that might be interpreted as an 'upgrade'. At any
level of investigation you are describing a full system replacement. If
considered a system replacement then the amounts don't appear so
astounding. A few things stick out there:

- With 75 phones, why not use CME and CUE? Using full CM and Unity or UC
there seems like using an M1 tank for a daily 10 mile commute over paved
roads in generally peaceful territory. Sure, you can do it, but why?
If that is the choice then there are going to be significant operating
costs.

- There is no software "upgrade" from CM4.1 to CUCMBE because there is
no equivalent to CUCMBE in the CM4.x world. As Lelio states the closest
thing was the ICS-7750 which has long been EoL and EoS. Further there
is no no hardware that will run both CM4.x and CM7.x CUCMBE so the
chosen path requires hardware replacement. These are like options on a
new car. Checking a few boxes can significantly increase cost.

- In terms of lifecycle this is pretty late in the game. Delaying this
long to consider an upgrade from 4.x to 7.x or later allows every one
else to takes the bumps and bruises of new discovery. At this point
it's pretty well proven. The tools and tricks are available. Even for
a migration as you desire there is community knowledge to perform a data
export in CM4.x and then bulk insert the configuration back into CM7.x.
