Cisco Softphone Client for Macbook

Is there any type of softphone client that will work on a Macbook with
Cisco call manager 4.2(3)?

Negative.

You would need CUCM 5.X or later and could use CUPC for OS X.

I assume this is because of SIP compatibility.

I also assume that there at no other non-cisco softphone options that
would work, but be "unsupported".

Correct,

CUCM didn't support SIP Line side devices prior to 5.X and also CUP
isn't supported prior to 5.X which is also required for CUPC to
function.

You might be able to find a non-Cisco app that will work, but it won't
be supported by Cisco TAC.

Correct, the Windows-based CUCM versions only support SIP trunks and
not SIP clients. There are no SCCP clients for the Mac.

I've heard of people trying CIPC in vmware on a mac but with mixed
results.

What about an H.323 client on the mac? CallManager would be happy with
that.
Google says XMeeting is a Mac H.323 Video Client. There could be something
else out there like that. Just add it as an H.323 GW in CallManager.

I've been running CIPC on VMware fusion with good results, though sometimes
problems arise (such as after putting the computer to sleep, sound in XP
will stop working properly). One day I plan on attempting to write a SCCP
client for OS X

X-Lite worked natively with CM as basic SIP endpoint last i checked.
