How to get VLAN from Switch to a Router via another switch

Hey everyone!

I'm trying to get a couple of ports on a 3550 to appear on a router.
normally easy, but I have another switch in between.

Hardware: 7206, 2 * 3550

Machine (1.1.1.2/30)
|
| Cat 3550-A - port 3 - dot1q 900
|
| Cat 3550-A - port 2 trunk port to 3550-B)
|
| Cat 3550-B (port 4 trunk port from 3550A)
|
?????
|
| Cat 3550-B - port gig0/11 Trunk to 7206
|
7206 VXR - GigE .900 with (1.1.1.1/30)

Question is. how do I get dot1q trunk from 3550-A onto the 7206vxr?

How to connect the two trunk ports.. I'm not sure.

Config:

3550-A

interface FastEthernet0/2
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,900
switchport mode trunk
!
interface FastEthernet0/3
switchport access vlan 900
switchport mode dynamic desirable

PC plugged into port 3 with 1.1.12/30

3550-B

interface FastEthernet0/4
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,900,901
switchport mode trunk
.
interface GigabitEthernet0/1
description Trunk to 7204VXR-G1/0
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,12,301-310,900,901
switchport mode trunk

7206vxr

interface GigabitEthernet1/0.900
description Test Trunk
encapsulation dot1Q 900
ip address 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.252
!

Thanks!

Hello:

It looks like you've set up a trunk port facing your PC. That won't work
unless you have a VLAN-aware NIC. On the port facing the PC, try:

Switchport mode access
Switchport access vlan 900

You probably want to "default interface fa0/2" from a global config prompt
to clear the trunking info out first.

OK.. The 3550-A (with the PC) is now:

interface FastEthernet0/2
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q

And

Switch#show mac-address-table interface fastEthernet 0/3
Mac Address Table

Vlan Mac Address Type Ports
---- ----------- -------- -----
900 000d.6099.13b4 DYNAMIC Fa0/3
Total Mac Addresses for this criterion: 1

So it's seeing the MAC of the PC...

Should the port 2 - trunk on the 3550-A also see the mac from Vlan900?
Because it isn't.

Switch#show mac-address-table interface fastEthernet 0/2
Mac Address Table
-------------------------------------------

Vlan Mac Address Type Ports
---- ----------- -------- -----
Switch#

I tried Switchport nonegotiate, but it didn't seem to do anything either.

Hello:

It looks like you've set up a trunk port facing your PC. That won't
work
unless you have a VLAN-aware NIC. On the port facing the PC, try:

Switchport mode access
Switchport access vlan 900

You probably want to "default interface fa0/2" from a global config
prompt
to clear the trunking info out first.

Hey everyone!

I'm trying to get a couple of ports on a 3550 to appear on a router.
normally easy, but I have another switch in between.

Hardware: 7206, 2 * 3550

Machine (1.1.1.2/30)
|
| Cat 3550-A - port 3 - dot1q 900
|
| Cat 3550-A - port 2 trunk port to 3550-B)
|
| Cat 3550-B (port 4 trunk port from 3550A)
|
?????
|
| Cat 3550-B - port gig0/11 Trunk to 7206
|
7206 VXR - GigE .900 with (1.1.1.1/30)

Question is. how do I get dot1q trunk from 3550-A onto the 7206vxr?

How to connect the two trunk ports.. I'm not sure.

Config:

3550-A

interface FastEthernet0/2
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,900
switchport mode trunk
!
interface FastEthernet0/3
switchport access vlan 900
switchport mode dynamic desirable

PC plugged into port 3 with 1.1.12/30

3550-B

interface FastEthernet0/4
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,900,901 switchport mode trunk .
interface GigabitEthernet0/1
description Trunk to 7204VXR-G1/0
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport trunk allowed vlan 1,12,301-310,900,901 switchport mode
trunk

7206vxr

interface GigabitEthernet1/0.900
description Test Trunk
encapsulation dot1Q 900
ip address 1.1.1.1 255.255.255.252
!

Thanks!

RE: How to get VLAN from Switch to a Router via another switch [In reply to]

Hi:

First thing, is VLAN 900 in the spanning tree domain on both switches? Are
they running VTP or are they configured locally? You should make sure the
VLAN is propogating.

Second, I would look at the 7206 Fast Ethernet interface and making sure
it's actually up and synched correctly. It could be something as simple as
duplex settings. You may have to issue other Gigabit-related commands on
that port if that's the case. You should see a MAC Address on int g1/0.900
that's local and, when it's working, the MAC Address of the PC.

I would recommend the following:

On the 7206

Int g0/1
No negotiation auto
Speed 1000
Duplex full

(it may not take the second 2 commands)

On the 3550

Int g0/1
Speed nonegotiate

Next, I would look at the interface facing the 7206 on the 3550 and see if
you're seeing any MAC addresses and, particularly, the MAC address on VLAN
900.

OK.. The 3550-A (with the PC) is now:

interface FastEthernet0/2
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport trunk allowed vlan 900
switchport mode trunk
!
interface FastEthernet0/3
switchport access vlan 900
switchport mode access
switchport nonegotiate

And

Switch#show mac-address-table interface fastEthernet 0/3
Mac Address Table
-------------------------------------------

Vlan Mac Address Type Ports
---- ----------- -------- -----
900 000d.6099.13b4 DYNAMIC Fa0/3
Total Mac Addresses for this criterion: 1

So it's seeing the MAC of the PC...

Should the port 2 - trunk on the 3550-A also see the mac from Vlan900?
Because it isn't.

Switch#show mac-address-table interface fastEthernet 0/2
Mac Address Table
-------------------------------------------

Vlan Mac Address Type Ports
---- ----------- -------- -----
Switch#

I tried Switchport nonegotiate, but it didn't seem to do anything either.

Ahh, sorry. Well, the "switchport mode dynamic desirable" on port 3 is a
trunking command, so I wonder if the port is thinking it's a trunk? Try
issuing the following on port 3:

Switchport mode access
Switchport nonegotiate

You may want to do a "sho mac-address-table int fa0/3" before you do the
commands above to see if you are seeing the MAC address of the PC and also
look at "sho interface fa0/3 trunk" to see if it's in trunking mode.

No.. The PC is in port 3 on the 3550-A... The trunk to the other switch is
Port 2 on the 3550-A.

Re: How to get VLAN from Switch to a Router via another switch [In reply to]

Does 3550-B even know about vlan 900? Is there :

1. an access port in 900 on that switch
2. VTP running between the switches
3. a manually created entry in the vlan database

what does "show vlan id 900" on 3550-B say.
