Linux Mint - compile CONFIG error

Linux Mint 5.1 - compile CONFIG error
When I run config
./configure --localstatedir=/var --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --with-wwwroot=/var/www
I get " Ccompiler can not create executables"
It does show GCC being present
make will not run with this bug.
BTW - is there a way to search the mail list?
